Assistant Professor - Bioinformatics - College of Sciences, Department of Neuroscience Developmental and Regenerative Biology
The Department of Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology (NDRB) in the College of Sciences (COS), in collaboration with the School of Data Science and Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design (KCEID), at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in bioinformatics, biostatistics or computational biology. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and the ability to direct an independently funded research program. Candidates who have not completed their doctoral dissertations (ABD) will not be considered. The successful candidate will be required to teach courses in their field of expertise within or outside the department and must demonstrate their ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of diverse urban populations and support the University's commitment to thrive as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a model for student success.
NDRB is a leader in scientific discovery and academic excellence, with research programs covering diverse areas of neuroscience and brain health, stem cell, developmental and regenerative biology, genomics/epigenomics, fertility/infertility, health and human disease, biotechnology, and military health. NDRB has two vibrant PhD programs in Developmental & Regenerative Sciences and Neuroscience, a new research-focused undergraduate degree in Neuroscience, as well as an atmosphere of collegiality and collaboration. The technical expertise and scholarship of the successful candidate will complement the strengths of the current NDRB faculty. Research areas of interest include innovative use of omics-level molecular data, machine learning and algorithm development for novel analyses of next- generation sequencing datasets, integrated analysis of multiple high-dimensional omics- level datasets, application of omics approaches in spatial contexts, and deep learning models to identify new disease-associated genes, therapeutic disease targets, and underlying mechanisms of development and regeneration. This candidate will be part of a nascent Bioinformatics Research Center and be expected to collaborate with faculty in NDRB and other departments in KCEID and teach/mentor students in statistical and computational methods. NDRB has a strong commitment to increasing the diversity of our faculty and to fostering an inclusive environment where all members of the academic and research community thrive. Successful candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to promoting an equitable, inclusive, and diverse scholarly environment in teaching, mentoring, research, and service. Expectations for the position include establishing a collaborative, externally funded and nationally recognized research program, inclusively teaching and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and contributing to service to the department, institution, and scientific community. Competitive recruitment packages, state- of-the-art core facilities, and modern laboratory space is available.
