Project Title: Next Generation High-Throughput Screening of Vaccine Candidates

Project proposal:

Vaccine research is currently undergoing a technological revolution that is enabling the accelerated development of new vaccines and rapid response to public health needs. The successful candidate will become a leader in GSK's effort to develop new strategies for the high-throughput screening of vaccine candidates within Preclinical Research and Development. This work will expand our fundamental understanding of vaccine platforms, contribute to the design of next generation RNA vaccines, and enable the rapid selection of optimal vaccine candidates on short timelines.

Responsibilities:

Within the US Protein Biochemistry research team, you will design, manage, and implement high-throughput screening assays to measure the performance of novel protein antigen designs and their incorporation into RNA vaccine candidates. You will consider both the properties of the RNA vector and protein antigen expressed in highly paralleled and miniaturized assays. You will also collaborate directly with both internal and external stakeholders to advance our capabilities for the organization and analysis of large datasets, implementation of new technologies for the automation of lab experimentation, and analysis of the resulting data to increase our fundamental understanding of protein antigens and RNA vaccines. You will be expected to contribute to the project by proposing research strategies, updating relevant knowledge, communicating project results (internally and externally), and writing scientific communications.

To be successful in this role you should have:
  • PhD in Biochemistry, RNA biology, or Cell biology
  • Expertise in cell culture and cell-based assays
  • Expertise in the measurement of protein properties including protein expression, thermostability, and/or antigenicity
  • Understanding of protein antigens and antibodies
  • Basic molecular biology techniques for the modification of DNA plasmids
  • Be highly organized, able to handle large datasets, and deal with complexity
  • Strong problem-solving, prioritization, and self-directional abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Ability to convey scientific messages across multidisciplinary functions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work in collaborative teams.

Preferred qualifications/opportunities for training:
  • Hands-on experience in the implementation of lab automation (Andrew+, Tecan, Hamilton)
  • Advanced molecular biology skills, generation of plasmid and/or phage display libraries
  • Hands-on experience producing/handling RNA
  • Experience with microplate readers and designing parallel experimental strategies
  • Experience with high-throughput assay development, fluorescence measurements, high-content imaging and/or cell-based assays
  • In depth knowledge protein antigen optimization and vaccine development
  • Understanding of the design and properties of RNA vaccines
  • Experience with Data Science and the analysis of large multi-parameter datasets
