About Vaccines R&D

As vaccine development has advanced, new types of vaccines have arisen, presenting challenges in characterization and further linking characteristics to function. However, recent development of vaccines against current pandemics or more complex diseases such as has met difficulties. In addition, the gaps in our knowledge on protective responses against pathogens are a significant barrier to ideal vaccine design and are often associated with increased risk of clinical failure.

What is Vaccines Scientific Leaders Program?

The Scientific Leaders Program in Vaccines is a 2-year global program which builds a pipeline of scientists with the right expertise, technical capabilities and behaviors to drive the future in Vaccines R&D .

How does the Vaccines Scientific Leaders Program work?

You will spend two years working on a key development project, contributing to key strategic areas of our Vaccines R&D business.  We have three location options; Italy, Belgium or US which aligns to our Vaccine s R&D hubs. Working on challenging projects will provide you with in-depth knowledge of the ways in which Science and Technology is being applied across R&D in GSK. All associates will be contributing to our mission to improve the quality of human life, by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer - all while fostering strong foundations for a future career in science.

Is the Vaccines Scientific Leaders Program for you?

This is a scientific/technical leadership position where you will be empowered to be innovative, collaborative, decisive and bold to solve novel R&D problems. On completion of the 2-year program we aim to bring you on-board into available technical leadership roles that best suits business' needs and your abilities.

We need Scientific leaders to help embed modern Scientific principles and ways of working within the vaccines R&D organi z ation.  You will do this through:

Project Title: Computational biology methods for exploring the potential of non-coding RNA (RNAi) in immune modulation

Project proposal:

The project aims at applying computational biology methods to elucidate the role of RNAi in vaccines and apply these findings to explore ways to modulate immune response in vaccine settings and possibly beyond. To do so, the candidate will develop a comprehensive and customizable pipeline dedicated to non-coding RNA (RNAi) analysis and analyze data sets originating from unique GSK studies and the public domain. If successful, the project will impact the development of novel RNA vaccines and potentially other areas in which immune modulatory compounds are used..

Responsibilities:

The project will include: (i) implementing and/or developing bioinformatics pipeline for extracting information on non-coding RNA from RNA seq data from GSK preclinical and clinical studies and from the public domain; (ii) performing differential expression analyses to identify non-coding RNAs; and (iii) building regulatory networks based on gene expression or proteomics data to functionally identify candidate non-coding RNAs.

Additionally, the selected candidate will undertake (all or some of) the following tasks:
  • Data collection and construction of databases integrating heterogeneous data
  • Analysis of genomics/transcriptomics and interactomics data
  • Statistical modelling and/or machine learning to extract features of interest
  • Analysis of interaction networks
  • Development of methods, databases, software, and/or application interface

Finally, the selected candidate will be expected to contribute to the project by proposing research strategies, updating relevant knowledge, communicating project results (internally and externally), writing scientific communications.

This position represents a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to have access to GSK exploratory data from vaccine trials

To be successful in this role you should have:
  • Applicants must hold a PhD degree, or the equivalent, and have significant expertise in bioinformatics and/or computational biology.
  • Hands-on experience in bioinformatics programming (Python and R) and computational environments (Linux, high performance computing, cloud computing)
  • Fluent in English, for both written and oral communication
  • Experience in analysis of siRNA, miRNA, non-coding RNA is preferred.
  • Additional experience in RNA biology, immunology, vaccinology, advanced statistics, and AI/ML is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven record of collaborative work

Available Location : Italy - Siena, Belgium - Rixensart, United States - Rockville

We recommend you apply as soon as possible, because we accept ongoing applications and will close this vacancy once we have enough applications.
