Research Assistant I

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Laboratory Research -Functions, under supervision, in the design and initiation of research experiments. These experiments include, but are not limited to, processing of human and murine samples for sequencing material analyses, DNA/RNA isolation from plasma, tissues and cell lines, flow cytometry, PCR, RT-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, protein purification, and other approaches. Participate in basic activities of murine studies, including, but not limited to, tumor measurements, tissue harvesting, data collection and maintenance of inventories.

Laboratory Support, Record Keeping and Data Collection -Assists with basic laboratory techniques and in preparation of media solutions, buffers and reagents.
-Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project.
Keep ample stock of supplies on hand
Order reagents and materials when needed.
-Know the procedure for obtaining repair or maintenance for lab equipment
-Prepare stock solutions
-Perform laboratory maintenance, such as cleaning

Tissue Culture -Maintain and establish culture of human and murine cells, which require rigorous sterile techniques. Observe and identify cell changes under the microscope, determine cell counts and cell viability.
-Prepare sterile media and solutions.
-Purify cells by various methods and monitor cells for proliferation and activation by standard laboratory methods.
-Monitor supplies, order and store tissue culture supplies to ensure efficient functioning.
-Prepare cells for cryogenic storage and keep them organized and updated on the laboratory inventoried cell stock list.
-The above requires using the microscope for prolonged periods, working for prolonged periods with hands extended under a flow hood and lifting cases (

Patient database maintenance and patient sample collection:

• Review laboratory (human and murine) correlative data.
• Ensure that the relevant data is coll ected at designated stages in the treatment process.
• Coordinate with ITB (Institutional tissue bank) for tissue pickup for proces sing and maintain databases accordingly.
• Process murine and human tissues for transcriptomic sequencing
• Cryopreserve single cell suspension.
• Maintain databases and accurate records of preserved material for sequencing at all stages of processing, storage and sequencing.

Other duties as assigned

Bachelor's degree, major course work in one of the basic sciences. No experience.
