Summary

The Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a competent and reliable Senior Manager of Animal Care to supervise the facility Managers or Supervisors in the vivariums and the daily husbandry activities conducted in them. This position will participate in the Animal Care Staffing interviewing process, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions. The Senior Manager will review and recommend changes to policy and procedure to ensure that CCM & investigator's staff adhere to all Baylor regulations. It is the responsibility of the Senior Manager to ensure the facility managers/supervisors maintain the physical condition of each vivaria, applying available resources and personnel to achieve safe, clean and functional environments for the animals and investigators. The Senior Manager will ensure that the managers/supervisors create accurate and timely documents and records regarding training, environmental parameters and animal health monitoring. In addition, this role oversees procurement and proper storage of husbandry supplies by the managers/supervisors. Shifts will include 7:00am - 4:30pm and regular on call weekends.

Reports to Director of Business Operations (Husbandry) and has multiple manager/supervisor direct reports and oversees numerous animal care/cage wash attendants and leads.

Ensures SOP compliance by all CCM employees & investigator staff & immediately reports deviations to management. Ensures that all equipment is operational & works with Director of Business Operations to schedule on-going maintenance & repairs. Ensures that necessary supplies are purchased as efficiently as possible & available as appropriate in a timely fashion.

Job Duties

  • Responsible for ensuring the care and maintenance of animals, equipment and facilities.
  • Assists with the development of CCM standard operating procedures.
  • Interacts with investigators to meet their research needs and maintains positive working relationship with investigators and animal care staff.
  • Ensures adherence to standard operating procedures and industry standards.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Ensures adequate inventory of feed, bedding, and supplies to support facility operations.
  • Interacts and coordinates with veterinary staff to assure health and welfare of animals.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets health monitoring results and implements necessary course of action.
  • Maintains and provides reports on facility function, personal issues, inventory, data collection, and room/animal logs and record.
  • Supervises facility Managers/Supervisors for a multitude of laboratory species.
  • Reviews and approves work plans and schedules including assignment and reassignment of personnel to tasks as required by shifting workloads or priorities.
  • Maintains a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
  • Provides regular direction and feed back to facility Managers/Supervisors on performance, disciplinary actions and preparing and delivering annual performance reviews.
  • May perform hands-on animal husbandry and other technical duties as necessary to ensure that all requirements are met according to established protocols.
  • Maintains competence in laboratory animal science, technology and management.
  • Ensures work quality and productivity.
  • Monitors attendance of Managers/Supervisors and staff.
  • Counsels Managers/Supervisors and staff with regard to proper behavior and proper techniques.
  • Performs quality assurance checks and weekly facility inspections.
  • Maintains inventory and ensures order supplies as needed.
  • Schedules and performs facility tours with new research personnel.
  • Provides support and participates with Managers/Supervisors in conducting disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Participates as management resource for disaster/hurricane as ride out team member as needed.
  • Influences others outside of own department regarding policies, practices and procedures and within the function.
  • Communicates and conducts briefings with Director regarding ongoing operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Ensures adherence to standard operating procedures and industry standards.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Ensures that adequate inventory of feed, bedding, and supplies to support facility operations are maintained for each facility.
  • Interacts with Managers/Supervisors and veterinary staff to assure health and welfare of animals.
  • Maintains and provides reports on facility function, personal issues, inventory, data collection, and room/animal logs and record.
  • Ensures consistent and appropriate supervision of animal care staff by facility managers and supervisors.
  • Ensures safety and occupational health requirements are followed for CCM staff.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five years of relevant experience
  • Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years experience in a vivarium facility
  • CMAR certification
