ROLE SUMMARY:

This role will work in partnership with the Vice President of Flu mRNA vaccines to help set the strategy and infrastructure for the Influenza viral vaccine program, integrating RNA platform development, cutting edge influenza vaccine science, and deep, working knowledge of the current influenza vaccine seasonal update and pandemic response systems. The goal is to deliver every season a reliable, game-changing influenza vaccine with superior efficacy. Requirements for this role include expertise in influenza virus, immunology, working knowledge of RNA-based vaccines and established industry experience in vaccine research and development. Will require global scientific alliance management with external parties to ensure that the vaccine is built from best available technologies and can be integrated into the global influenza vaccine system. The role also requires vision, leadership experience and established track record in working with cross-functional teams outside of a reporting structure, presenting research and strategy as well as report writing, responding to regulatory questions, and publishing research findings.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support and build the internal infrastructure and processes required to enable a robust and rapid response to seasonal and pandemic influenza with mRNA technologies.
  • Help to implement potential strategic and infrastructure changes required to ensure successful implementation of influenza mRNA vaccines into the current global influenza vaccine system
  • Communicate the strategy, priorities, and direction to project representatives and Discipline Leaders and ensure effective partnership amongst team members to meet goals of program.
  • Actively manage project risks, devising and implementing appropriate mitigation activities with multidisciplinary teams. Lead timely and effective communication of project risks and impact to senior leaders.
  • Ensures that intellectual property is appropriately obtained and safeguarded.
  • Operate at the interface between research and development, coordinating with non-research functions in advancing the vaccine through developmental stage gates.
  • Take a key role in communication about the Flu vaccine program in internal Pfizer documents and external patent applications, regulatory submissions, scientific papers, and other communications.
  • Serve as a key scientific liaison with external alliance partners, including collaborating companies, government agencies and non-governmental organizations to help advance and implement Flu mRNA vaccines.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
  • 15+ years industry experience in virology, vaccinology and immunology, with basic scientific expertise in influenza, including experimental bench research, and practical knowledge of global flu vaccine surveillance, recommendation, reagent generation, and regulatory system
  • Proven track record of project advancement and delivery.
  • Practical experience with RNA vaccine technologies.
  • Understanding of the business aspects of vaccines, and viral vaccine scientific, clinical and competitive landscape.
  • Demonstrated innovation and the ability to apply knowledge, techniques and skills to identify and validate best new technologies.
  • PhD in virology, immunology or a related field.


Supervision
  • May directly manage a small team.
  • Indirectly manage a much larger and evolving cross-functional team to advance and manage the scientific aspects of the development and implementation of Flu mRNA vaccine candidates


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Strong abilities in scientific analysis, cross-functional collaboration, people management, scientific writing, and public speaking required.


    NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Role will require international and domestic travel to Influenza meetings and conferences.
