Post-Doctoral Research Associate

The Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine, seeks a Research Associate to join the Hughes laboratory.

The Research Associate is a post-doctoral candidate who is expected to conduct research investigating mechanisms of antimicrobial action and bacterial strategies of resistance. The overarching focus of these studies is the development and characterization of novel bactericidal peptides to combat infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. The position will entail in vitro experiments with Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria including antimicrobial assays, mode-of-action studies, and peptide-based biochemical/molecular analyses. The planned research will also require in vivo animal-model research and imaging using a variety of pathogenic bacteria and infection types.

Additional responsibilities of the position include writing and preparing manuscripts for scientific publication; making presentations at local, national, and/or international conferences; assisting in the preparation of grant applications; and establishing new avenues of research in the laboratory. This position is restricted and contingent upon funding.

Qualified applicants must have a Ph.D. in the field of Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related fields.
