As a postdoctoral researcher in PNNL’s Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD), you will join a team led by Herman Cho that is investigating structure and bonding of the actinide elements using advanced spectroscopic methods, primarily solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy. Our team interacts with a diverse group of collaborators in the preparation and synthesis of samples and the development of theoretical explanations of experimental observations. This project is funded by the Heavy Element Chemistry Program of the U.S. DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences.
Responsibilities
What you will do:
Conduct independent research and work on team projects
Lead manuscript preparation and maintain a strong overall publication record in the peer-reviewed scientific literature
Interact, communicate, and collaborate with a diverse team of research staff across PNNL
Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings
Contribute to the development of research proposals
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications (not all need to be met):
• Ph.D. in Chemical Physics, Physical Chemistry, Solid State Physics, Materials Sciences, or related field
• Strong background in solid-state NMR and/or NQR spectroscopy
• Knowledge interpreting and simulating NMR and NQR data
• Expertise in solid state physics, particularly theories of magnetism and magnetic materials
• Ability to design, engineer, construct, and repair radiofrequency circuitry
• Ability to design, engineer, and build custom scientific instrumentation
• Computer programming skills
• Experience with cryogenic experimental methods and equipment
• Knowledge of methods in synthetic inorganic chemistry
• Willingness to work in a cooperative, collaborative environment
• Independent and self-motivated
• Commitment to performing laboratory work safely and conscientiously
• Proficiency in written and verbal communication
