The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) seeks a diverse pool of nominees and applicants to lead neuroscience research at UTHSC. The incumbent will be appointed jointly as Director of the UTHSC Neuroscience Institute and Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology of the College of Medicine in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Neuroscience Institute at UTHSC is supported by the Neuroscience Center of Excellence, one of several Centers of Excellence established by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission in 1985. The UTHSC Neuroscience Institute has basic science and clinical members spanning 10 departments, and fosters neuroscience research through support of neuroscience track graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, the Neuroscience Imaging Center and Behavioral Core, and a robust seminar series. The UTHSC Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology is the hub of this neuroscience community that expands across UTHSC Colleges and campuses across the state of Tennessee. UTHSC is the flagship state-wide, public, academic health institution in Tennessee. Founded in 1911, the mission of UTHSC is to improve the health and well-being of Tennesseans and the global community by fostering integrated, collaborative, and inclusive education, research, scientific discovery, clinical care and public service.

Applicants must hold a PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree and meet the criteria for the ranks of Professor or Associate Professor, with tenure. Required qualities are documented accomplishments in teaching, proven mentoring ability of junior faculty, and a national recognition of their research with a history of a strong independent research program in the neurosciences and current externally funded grant awards. Strong priority will be given to those candidates whose research programs synergize with and complement existing programs at UTHSC in neurodegeneration/regeneration, dementia, stroke and cerebrovascular disease, the blood-brain barrier and cerebrovascular unit, movement disorders, sensory systems, and neurotoxicology, including chemical pollutants as well as toxicants such as the microbiome and stressors. The successful candidate will also have a record of administrative and management achievements and previous leadership experience. As Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, the appointed individual has oversight of the research, educational and service missions, and leads the faculty and staff of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology.
