Multiple postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the laboratory of Professor Mohamed Seleem at the Center for One Health Research (COHR) at Virginia Tech. The lab is located in Blacksburg, a thriving town and ranked among the best places to live in the United States. This position offers highly competitive salaries and benefits. The candidates will join a diverse and innovative group of scientists discovering and developing new antimicrobials for the treatment of infectious diseases and drug-resistant pathogens. The training environment is especially rich, resourceful, and dynamic scientific environment. Highly interactive and highly collaborative for infectious diseases, drug discovery, molecular biology, and immunology research because of a robust and interactive research community where faculty and trainees from the different labs share the working space. The PI will work closely with the successful candidate in a collaborative lab environment to develop the project and assist you with your overarching career goals. This position is not limited to only projects provided by the PI but, can easily expand to the candidate developing their own research project and ample opportunities for training and career development.

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, Pharmacy, biology, medical sciences or related field. Prior research experience in antimicrobial, microbiology, or drug discovery, including animal models will be a plus. Strong written, oral communication, and critical thinking skills are required. Candidates at both junior and senior levels are welcome to apply. Details of Dr. Seleem’s laboratory, on-going research projects, and recent publications can be found at http://www.vetmed.vt.edu/people/bios/seleem.asp.

The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will work on specific projects which will encompass identification and validation of novel antimicrobial targets and characterization of molecular mechanisms of drug resistance. Successful candidates will use and develop techniques for identifying the molecular target of small molecules (antimicrobials, antibiotics, antifungals) and will be responsible for performing animal experiments and testing the efficacy of new antimicrobials in animal models. The techniques used may be biochemical-based and microbiological-based approaches, genetics, chemical biology, proteomics or other disciplines. The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will lead independent and collaborative research projects, in preparation for the future career, to achieve all of our objectives in our overarching program; “Identification and validation of novel antimicrobial targets in multidrug resistant pathogens”.
