The role and opportunity

We have established the non-GMO Accelerated Microbial Evolution Technology for Fermented Foods through a 5-year government grant (MBIE Endeavour Programme) and are positioning AgResearch as a genuine science leader in the food fermentation area.

As a result we are seeking a Senior Scientist who has specialised microbial biotechnology expertise to lead AgResearch to the next phase in a future-focussed Fermentation Science and Technology Platform and to develop new biotechnology solutions and pipeline projects.

Location: Palmerston North, New Zealand

Expected salary: $95,000 - $135,000

Minimum guaranteed hours: 40 hours per week

What you will be doing

Extend our work on modulation of key functional traits of microbes and develop new biotechnologies to deliver essential know-how to the emerging field of ‘precision fermentation’.

Provide thought leadership and guidance for strategic transformations in   fermentation science and technology for our sector.  

Actively identify new R&D opportunities in microbial biotechnology and fermentation science for NZ and international stakeholders (e.g. government and commercial clients).

Initiate, lead and contribute to successful funding proposals that attract significant revenue and offer solutions to existing and new customers.

Inform strategy and business planning by anticipating and responding to trends in fermentation science and related fields..

Contribute to and/or lead research that provides solutions to complex and unique problems and results in generation of new patents, products and practices.

Your ideal background

PhD degree in microbial biotechnology, preferably with aspects of fermentation in food and ingredient applications.

A minimum of five years as a practising scientist in a directly related field of science.

Good project management skills and experience working with industry would be an added advantage.
