The role and opportunity
Our Rumen Microbiology Team is currently seeking a Senior Scientist responsible for delivery of high-quality science outcomes, across multiple areas of specialisation and relevant to pastoral industry priorities. The Senior Scientist will identify and convert opportunities into successful R&D proposals and outcomes.

Hours work per week: 40
Days Required: Monday to Friday

Employment Type: Permanent – Full Time
What you will be doing
Participating in on-going research into the effects of direct fed microbials for mitigating ruminant methane emissions, the development of a methane vaccine, and/or the development of methane inhibitors.
Taking a key role in the development of pure culture methanogen and rumen in vitro screening assays, and animal trials testing microbial strain and/or inhibitor efficacy.
Contributing to the design and execution of new rumen microbiology research projects to discover new methane-reducing technologies applicable on farm in NZ.
Delivering and leading high-quality science in Rumen Microbiology across collaborative projects both locally and internationally
Identifying new opportunities for delivering R&D solutions of importance to the NZ agricultural sector, which have direct commercial application and/or are of high strategic importance in advancing scientific knowledge and theory.
Your ideal background
- PhD degree in Microbiology or Microbial Bioinformatics
- Strong knowledge of anaerobic microbiology
- Skills in carrying out and analysing genomic, metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses of gut microbial systems
