The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a forward-looking, collaborative leader to serve as the Executive Director of the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC).

The CUNY Graduate Center is the home of the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), a state-of-the-art CUNY research institute. The vision of the ASRC is to improve human, societal, and environmental well-being through excellence in interdisciplinary scientific discovery and education. Housed in a 200,000 square-foot facility located on the CUNY City College of New York campus in West Harlem, the ASRC was designed to promote collaboration among scientists across CUNY, nationally and internationally in five areas of research and innovation: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences.

 Established in 1961, the Graduate Center serves as the primary doctoral degree granting institution for the largest public urban university system in the United States. CUNY enrolls more than 269,000 degree-credit students and 247,000 adult, continuing and professional education students at 24 campuses across New York City. The Graduate Center is a R1 institution, widely recognized for its highly ranked degree programs, world-class faculty, innovative research, affordability, and commitment to advancing knowledge for the public good.

The Executive Director plays a central role in advancing the research, education and outreach missions of the ASRC as a CUNY-wide asset. The Executive Director participates in strategic planning for the sciences at the Graduate Center and within CUNY, communicating the vision for and impact of the ASRC to internal and external audiences, and ensuring that the ASRC operations are effective and sustainable. Key roles for the Executive Director include supporting growth and national recognition of the ASRC, and promoting ASRC integration with CUNY campuses, thereby contributing to the CUNY mission of being a transformative engine of social mobility that benefits students and the region.

The Executive Director will support the initiative directors in developing the distinctive interdisciplinary research agenda of the ASRC. With the assistance of the Director of Operations, the Executive Director will oversee and support the five research Initiatives and develop business plans and goals for the core facilities, including setting revenue targets, expanding the user base, coordinating short courses, and building relationships with academic and research programs at CUNY and other universities. The Executive Director has overall responsibility for enhancing the internal organization, communications, and infrastructure necessary for the continued success and growth of the ASRC. This position reports to the Graduate Center Dean for the Sciences, and serves as a member of the Graduate Center provost and president’s leadership teams.

Duties include the following:

  • Leads collaborative efforts to envision new research activities for the ASRC and to develop new funding opportunities for the ASRC as a whole, including partnerships with peer institutions;
  • Collaborates with the Initiative directors and managers to refine the strategic direction of the ASRC; monitors progress directly and through external review panels at center-wide and initiative-specific levels
  • Creates revenue and grant targets for the sciences; establishes and maintains relationships with funding agencies and commercial firms, including continual engagement with these entities for relationship building;
  • Supports and advises the Dean for the Sciences and the Provost on scientific programs, policies, research needs and opportunities;

  • Works closely on the conception and implementation of new ASRC-wide initiatives, including public programming and outreach programs;
  • Takes the lead in creating and enabling extramural public-private partnerships for the ASRC scientific initiatives and core laboratories in the New York metropolitan area, the nation, and beyond, in concert with doctoral faculty in the sciences;
  • Manages the ASRC budget and supervises budgetary resources allocated to the ASRC, with guidance from the Graduate Center Office of the Provost and Office of Finance and Administration.
  • Facilitates ASRC engagement with CUNY campuses; advances ASRC priorities and programs within CUNY and with external constituencies;
  • Interfaces with Graduate Center administrative offices, including: Human Resources; Finance and Administration, Sponsored Research; Institutional Research; and Communications and Advancement, ensuring that the administration and operational functions are efficient and coordinated;
  • Supervises staff; direct reports include the director of operations, budget director, and director of sponsored programs administration. Works closely with the development officer for the sciences; oversees the hiring of new ASRC employees, in coordination with the Graduate Center Office of Human Resources, and also with the Office of the Provost for academic appointments;
  • Oversees activities within the Office of Sponsored Programs at the ASRC;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean for the Sciences and Provost.
