Position description

The McGill University Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in collaboration with the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the areas at the interface of medical devices and digital health.

The new faculty member will be a full-time member of the Department of BME and will establish their research programme at the RI-MUHC. Areas of special interest are wearables, continuous monitoring, quantitative and computational methods (including machine learning), clinical translation and innovation. Experience and collaboration with industry will be considered an asset. The successful candidate will benefit from a dynamic and nurturing environment in the RI-MUHC and McGill where multidisciplinary research is a priority. The candidate would be expected to develop an interdisciplinary research program and to teach one course (at the graduate level).

We are seeking outstanding candidates with expertise and research interests in Biomedical Engineering defined broadly, and with collaborative interests to build a creative, high impact research program bridging BME and clinical research in the RI-MUHC. The successful candidate will complement and expand upon existing strengths of the BME department in Devices & Sensors, Modeling & AI, Imaging, Molecules & Materials, Living Systems Engineering and the multiple areas of clinical research excellence at the MUHC-RI. We strongly encourage collaboration with colleagues in other Departments of the Faculty of Medicine & Health Science, and the Faculties of Engineering and Science, as well as with industry and government, as relevant.

About us

The Department of Biomedical Engineering, the first Department of its kind in Canada, is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University and continues to uphold a tradition of leadership and excellence. Our mission is to carry out deeply interdisciplinary, transformative research and development at the boundaries of the physical sciences, engineering and medicine; and to train future generations of biomedical engineers.

Our department is made up of 12 full-time faculty, 40 associate members, and 16 adjunct and associate members, with a strong emphasis on research and translation. Teaching is primarily at the graduate level, within the interfaculty Biological & Biomedical Engineering (BBME) graduate program (, which is jointly administered by the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Bioengineering, and with over 150 students currently enrolled. 

The RI-MUHC is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), the major academic hospital centre affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University. Job Duties

The new faculty member will be expected to build a multidisciplinary research team encompassing a diversity of lived experiences, identities, and career stages.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Develop an independent, externally funded research program of the highest international standards in their own areas of expertise, aligned with the priorities of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This program is expected to include interdisciplinary collaboration with relevant partner units within the University and its affiliates;
  • Successfully compete for research funding, supervise graduate students, and contribute to teaching;
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and other knowledge translation and exchange activities;
  • Participate in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission including teaching, supervision of a diverse body of graduate students and service to the scholarly community;
  • Contribute to the research ambitions in the RI-MUHC

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Applicants must have a PhD in a field relevant to the position;
  • An outstanding record of research/scholarly activity, which is demonstrated by the quality of publications in top-ranked, internationally recognized, and field-relevant academic journals, presentations at significant conferences, and strong endorsements by referees of international stature;
  • A commitment to and evidence of high-quality teaching, inclusive pedagogy, and effective supervision;
  • A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusiveness (EDI);
  • Industry experience and interest in innovation and translation are an asset.
