Position Summary

Michigan State University invites applications and nominations for an educator and scholar with the vision to serve as Chairperson of the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE). The CMSE department (https://cmse.msu.edu/) is entering its eighth year as one of the first academic units in the nation to focus on computational science and data science as a discipline. Currently housing over 57 full-time and associated faculty members, the department seeks to educate the data-driven work force of the future and build collaborative interdisciplinary teams with expertise, amongst other, in machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical learning, algorithm development, data analytics, mathematical theory, and application domains. The application domains span several disciplines in the natural sciences and mathematics, medicine, engineering, the social sciences, and the humanities, with a strong commitment to enhance computational science and data science across disciplines. CMSE faculty have joint appointments in eleven units and are leaders in astrophysics, bioinformatics, geosciences, machine learning, medical imaging, plant science, quantum chromodynamics, soft matter physics, scientific computing, large scale simulations, and topological data analysis. The department faculty members have strong dedications and commitments to research and education at all levels in computational and data science. The CMSE department hosts a thriving undergraduate and Master’s program in data science, and a PhD program that has a popular dual degree program across units.
