Postdoctoral and Research Associate Positions in Molecular Microbiology

  • LSU Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA
  • Full time positions available immediately
  • To study molecular regulation of Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation and the ecology of oral biofilms
  • Salary and benefits will be commensurate with NIH standards and experience

A postdoctoral position and a research associate position are immediately available to study the molecular regulation of Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation and the ecology of oral biofilms. A key etiological agent of human dental caries, S. mutans possesses multiple mechanisms to colonize the tooth surface and become numerically significant under certain conditions leading to dysbiosis of the plaque microbiota and development of carious lesions. The Wen lab at LSUHSC uses comprehensive approaches, which include various modern molecular and bioinformatics techniques and in vivo and in vitro models mimicking the oral cavity, to explore the molecular mechanisms that govern the regulation of S. mutans biofilm formation and the interactions between S. mutans and other major bacterial species in the plaque microbiota, and to identify novel strategies against dental caries.

Qualifications: Candidates for both positions should be highly self-motivated and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. For the postdoctoral position, we are particularly interested in individual who (1) has recently obtained his/her PhD in related field with strong experience in current genetics, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry; and (2) possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills. For the research associate position, applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences majors. Prior experience working in a Microbiology, Biochemistry, and/or Molecular Biology laboratory is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of this postdoctoral associate will be to conduct independent research by following established protocols. In addition, the postdoctoral associate will also be expected to provide mentorship to other junior personnel and students in the lab, assist the PI in manuscript preparation, and present findings at national and international scientific conferences. The primary responsibility of the research associate position will be to carry out research experiments under the supervision of the PI. In addition, some laboratory management work will also be needed.

Salary and benefits: Salary and benefits will be commensurate with NIH standards and experience. These full time positions are available immediately, and will remain open until filled.
