Senior Faculty Positions - OSUCCC-James Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology
The Ohio State University

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) seeks candidates for tenure-track Associate or Full Professor positions with expertise in the following research areas:

  • T-cell biology Innate immunity and inflammation Immune regulation and tolerance Cell therapy, synthetic immunology, immuno-genomics and cancer vaccines Translational and clinical immuno-oncology (IO) Immune monitoring and discovery

The PIIO is a comprehensive bench-to-bedside research initiative focused on harnessing the body’s immune system to fight cancer at all levels (https://cancer.osu.edu/piio).  Established by a pledge of more than $100 million from Pelotonia (pelotonia.org), the PIIO represents Ohio State's commitment to grow the exciting area of immuno-oncology. Led by founding director and renowned immunologist Zihai Li, MD, PhD, the PIIO builds upon a rich portfolio of active investigator-initiated IO clinical trials being conducted at the OSUCCC – James. Its external advisory board is comprised of multiple world leaders in the field of IO including Drs. Lisa Butterfield, Lieping Chen, Carl June, Susan Kaech, Miriam Merad, and Robert Schreiber.

The PIIO is comprised of two Research Centers: Systems and Translational IO. Systems IO is a systems-wide strategy to study the anti-cancer immune response holistically to discover the next IO breakthroughs and create effective cancer immunotherapies. Through Translational IO, we turn discoveries into new or improved cancer treatments and broaden the indications and patient populations that can be treated with cellular therapy. Our Immune Monitoring and Discovery Platform (IMDP) supports each center, providing comprehensive cell-based and molecule-based immunoassay services to support basic, translational, and clinical IO studies. The PIIO’s Immuno-Oncology Informatics Group (IOIG) provides data analytics for flow and mass cytometry, bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq, spatial transcriptomics and imaging, neoantigen discovery, and more.

The successful candidate will become faculty at the rank of either Associate Professor or Full Professor. Applicants must hold advanced degrees such as a MD, DVM, PharmD, PhD, or MD/PhD. Applicants must have a national and international reputation in their field and significant independent research experience with both historical and current federal funding of research projects as a Principal Investigator. Current or historical experience leading multi-component grants (e.g., P01, SPORE, U awards) desired. Applicants should have an accomplished history of mentorship and experience with team science. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an extramurally funded research program, perform collaborative research with others, participate in graduate and medical education, and must be board-certified and meet medical licensure requirements in Ohio for those also pursuing a clinical position. The ideal candidate could also serve as director for one of the PIIO’s Research Centers, setting the strategic vision for growing their center’s research initiatives, recruiting, retaining, and developing strong investigators, and developing and enhancing collaborative partnerships both internally and externally.

Candidates will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory spaces; cutting-edge core research facilities (Spectrum Flow Cytometry, Time-of-Flight Mass Cytometry, Multiplex Histology, Single Cell Technology, GMP Facility for Cell Therapy, Antibody Engineering Facility, IO Informatics and more); a competitive salary and start-up funding.

The OSUCCC – James is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center, rated “Exceptional,” the highest rating given to cancer centers by the NCI; is one of only a few centers funded by the NCI to conduct phase I, II and III clinical trials on novel anticancer drugs; and includes the third-largest freestanding cancer hospital in the country. Ohio State is located in Columbus—a highly ranked, modern, affordable, friendly and diverse city. The Ohio State University is an EOE/AA/M/F/D/V employer.
