ROLE SUMMARY

This is a laboratory-based analytical Senior Scientist position that reports into the Analytical Development group within Vaccine Research and Development. The successful candidate will play an important role in providing high quality, timely, critical in-process analytical support of macromolecules including nucleic acids (DNA, mRNA) and proteins to guide process development efforts. This incumbent is expected to be proficient with using and interpreting data from a range of separation and characterization techniques (e.g., LC/MS, RP-HPLC, CE, IEX, SEC/RI/MALLS, UV-Vis, CD or colorimetric based assays).

Responsibilities

  • Identify key quality attributes for new vaccine candidates such as glycoconjugates, proteins, or mRNAs, and contribute to the selection of analytical methodology and techniques to be used.
  • Familiarity with ICH guidelines for method development, qualification and transfer to other departments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within Vaccine Research and Development organization including Bioprocess, Analytical, and Formulation Development groups.
  • Independently analyze, interpret, and provide conclusion and present experimental data.
  • Establish and utilize new technologies, where required, to enhance our characterization toolbox and understanding about the drug substance and drug products being developed.
  • The individual will perform routine and non-routine sample analysis support for vaccine development.
  • Plan and prioritize own assay development and analysis activities to ensure timelines are met.
  • Author and review laboratory methods and reports.
  • The individual is expected to contribute and participate in general laboratory maintenance activities (such as maintenance of equipment, managing laboratory waste.


Qualifications

Must-Have
  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline with 0-2 years of academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology experience OR an MS plus a minimum of 7 years of related work experience is required
  • Demonstrated technical skills and scientific expertise in analytical method development, troubleshooting and familiarity with ICH guidelines.
  • The ability to independently design, plan, and execute method development to provide both qualitative and quantitative characterization support for early phase vaccine development programs.
  • Proficiency and ability to utilize analytical techniques such as Mass spectrometry, HPLC separation methods, CE, DLS and UV-Vis to characterize potential vaccine candidates
  • Demonstrated experience with both analytical laboratory data as well as process relevant data are a requirement to be successful in this position
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent documentation skills


Nice-to-Have
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry space
  • Knowledge of biophysical techniques such as AUC, CD, DSC and ITC
  • Experience with large biomolecules (e.g. mRNA and protein) higher order characterization (HOS) characterization
  • Proficiency with R or python programming language and automation using liquid handling automation robots

  • Standard laboratory conditions - sitting, standing, primarily lab based
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and ability to perform complex data analysis
