This role is accountable for leading a small team of epidemiologists who work across the matrix to support key functions, including Clinical Sciences, Development, Discovery/Research organization, Regulatory, Safety and Medical Affairs. This includes the development and implementation of a range of epidemiologic studies and measurement strategies in support of investigational assets and marketed products. The position provides leadership through strategic and technical input into vaccines programs by managing epidemiologist contributions at the Vaccine Development Team and the Research and Development sub-teams, such as the Integrated Evidence Team (IET), clinical development team, Value Evidence Team (VET) and Safety Review Team (SRT), and through your agenda-drive participation at GSK governance bodies.

Success in this role is accomplished through established technical expertise in the application of epidemiology to vaccine development, well-articulated deliverables, and external credibility. Experience in line management, including a demonstrated ability to coach and mentor epidemiologists, and evidence of matrix leadership across divisions are critical. This position is accountable for ensuring epidemiologists engage cross-functional evidence generation teams early in development with the goal of ultimately demonstrating product value to patients and healthcare providers, including approved label claims (FDA and EMA) and evidence for immunization advisory bodies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) when appropriate, and reimbursement/payer bodies. This position includes management of approximately 6-9 people and is purposefully aligned and responsive to the Vaccines R&D organizational structure.

In this role, you will manage the strategic input and oversight of vaccines epidemiology programs and deliverables for the vaccine R&D pipeline and marketed portfolio, including support of the mRNA platform and other strategic partnerships as it pertains to your vaccine cluster. Responsibilities include:

  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders (e.g., Clinical Sciences, Safety, Development, Regulatory, Value Evidence & Outcomes and Medical Affairs counterparts etc.) to understand and influence the overarching asset strategy and disease/target/project priorities; clarify the key knowledge gaps and translate gaps into epidemiology program strategy; lead scientific design of studies and effectively communicate and advocate for the epidemiology program strategy for the therapy area and key assets.
  • Manage a small team of epidemiologists
  • Lead resourcing strategy; provide guidance and support to team members on their development of the specific disease & project support strategy, work priorities, and delivery; conduct scientific review and governance of team members' work output; discuss and agree performance and development objectives.
  • Provide advice and guidance for best practice in vaccine epidemiology evidence generation strategies and methodologies, including enabling internal and external scientific advice.
  • Leverage knowledge of the external environment to enable more efficient epidemiology evidence development differentiation of GSK vaccines.
  • Represent the function externally in regulatory meetings, public-private partnerships and at scientific societies, as required.
  • Serve on the extended Epidemiology and Patient-Centered Outcomes Leadership Team and, as appropriate, lead departmental and divisional initiatives to continuously improve operations and advance innovative science and analytics across GSK

Qualifications

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • Doctorate in epidemiology or related public health/quantitative science field (Master's in field with equivalent experience will be considered)
  • 5+ years in vaccine development and/or research, preferably in an industry setting
  • 5+ years practical experience conducting pharmacoepidemiologic research

Preferred Qualifications

If you have the following characteristic, it would be a plus:
  • Line management experience
  • Experience in the application of epidemiology to vaccines in settings other than industry, such as national government surveillance programs or immunization advisory boards
  • Experience in leadership roles for scientific organizations, cross-industry activities and/or public-private partnerships
  • Excellent communication skills to interact effectively in multi-disciplinary matrix teams and to influence global stakeholders and key opinion leaders.
  • Experience coaching and developing colleagues new to industry
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently to develop credibility with colleagues within and outside Epidemiology.
  • Ability to resolve problems through resourceful use of information and contacts.
  • Ability to work well within a business-driven environment, establish cross-functional relationships, balance priorities and handle multiple tasks through good planning, project administration, and organization skills
  • Good understanding of regulations relevant to application of epidemiology to clinical development and safety for vaccines
