The PoC organization will report into the Chief Business Innovation Office. The head of portfolio management will report to the head of the Partner of Choice (PoC) organization. The person will be responsible for assessing the innovation landscape within Pfizer's focus areas and prioritizing top mechanisms, approaches, and modalities for Pfizer to focus on for partner of choice. Additionally, they will be responsible to assessing and tiering top target companies within the priority innovation areas for the account management team to focus on.

The head of portfolio management will also be responsible for optimizing the mix of the partner of choice portfolio, maintaining productivity (success rates and cycle times) and ensuring that the target number of programs are internalized. They will lead efforts to maximizing value of the partner of choice portfolio. The head of portfolio management will partner closely with chief scientific officers (CSOs) and chief development officers (CDOs) across Pfizer's 6 therapeutic areas as well as the business development organization, the early science and innovation (ES&I) organization and the commercial development organization.

Role Responsibilities
  • Assess the innovation landscape within Pfizer's focus areas established by Commercial Strategy and Innovation and identify top areas of innovationto prioritize for partner of choice including innovative modalities,mechanisms,and approaches
  • Develop framework and criteria to prioritize potential target companies
  • Within priority innovation areas use framework to tier target companies
  • Guide potential deal structure(s) for each tier of priorities
  • Work closely with Pfizer CSOs, CDOs as well as BD, ES&I and commercial development teams to inform priority areas and target companies
  • Evolve priority innovation areas and target companies as needed and based on deals executed and evolving innovation priorities
  • Assess the innovation landscape Outline guiding principles to inform mix for partner of choice portfolio
  • Ensure that executed deals align well with priority areas and desired portfolio mix
  • Develop ambitious R&D productivity metrics for the partner of choice portfolio and identify leading indicators of success
  • Closely monitor the programs from the PoC portfolio that are internalized and ensure high quality and optimal scale and mix
  • Support development of semester 2 goals for PoC LT and embed goals with key collaborators
  • Guide activities of approximately 3 direct reports including directors and senior directors


Basic Qualifications
  • 20 + years of pharmaceutical industry and senior leadership experience
  • PhD or MD in discipline related to biological sciences
  • 5+ years in R&D strategy and/or portfolio management
  • Strong understanding of emerging trends in science and the biopharmaceutical industry
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated result-orientation, tenacity, and follow-through
  • The ability to be successful in a matrixed environment with a high degree of flexibility; collaborate well with Pfizer CSOs, CDOs as well as BD, ES&I and commercial development functions to accomplish business objectives
  • Must have a proven track record of being effective at self-management and driving results
  • Strong Financial and business acumen


Preferred Qualifications
  • MBA
  • 10+ years in management consulting
