Job Details

The Research Care Coordinator helps patients understand the importance and benefits of clinical trials, and provides one-on-one guidance, support, education, referrals, and care coordination for patients considering clinical trials or enrolled on trials. The Coordinator will interact with patients who may be potential clinical trial candidates and share information about clinical trials and MD Anderson resources. The candidate will document and maintain a record of patient interactions, services provided, and outcomes.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Customer Service:

* Serves as liaison between the patient, their family and the research study team
* Assists with appointments and scheduling, connects patients and their caregivers to internal & external support services and programs as needed, and provides education and information about the research process.
* Assists patients with navigating MDACC programs and services, as well as local services such as rail, buses, lodging, etc.

Build Relationships:

* Promotes teamwork and supports MDACC's multidisciplinary care model to patients, staff and research teams.
* Fosters relationships with all patient care teams, including clinical, research, social services
* Serves as a resource for the research team, providing feedback and insight on patient perceptions, concerns, and needs pertaining to participating in the research.
* Collaborates and interacts with professionals (physicians, nurses, social workers) at MD Anderson and other health and medical facilities, academic institutions, and community-based organizations in the Texas Medical Center, the Houston metropolitan area, and Harris and surrounding counties as needed.
* Promotes the research navigation program to the MDACC community and the community at large.

Innovative Thinking:

* Assesses patients for barriers that effect patients' ability to participate on clinical studies, and provides support and referrals as needed to reduce barriers to participation.

Data Management:

* Documents and tracks program metrics, such as patient interactions, trial participation barriers, solutions, and outcomes.
* Organizes and maintains accurate records, documenting all program metrics, such as patient interactions, trial participation barriers, solutions, and outcomes. Prepare reports and updates as requested.

Other:

* Attends meetings, training courses, conferences, and seminars to stay informed of the state of the science in the areas of cancer health disparities, research navigation, community resources, women and minority recruitment strategies, and cultural competency.
* Helps with grants, manuscripts, scientific papers as needed
* Conducts various training programs.
* Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree in Health or Social Sciences, Psychology, or related field.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Two years of experience in project/program coordination, clinical studies, patient navigation, or health education. May substitute additional experience for required education on a one to one basis.

Preferred:
  • Experience working with underserved populations and with recruiting minorities and women to clinical studies.
  • Fluency in Spanish, speaking, writing, and reading
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Ability to function independently
