Lab Automation Scientist for Inorganic Materials Synthesis - 96309
Division: MS-Materials Sciences

The Materials Sciences Division (MSD, https://www2.lbl.gov/msd/) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) invites applications for a Lab Automation Scientist position from outstanding scientists to lead and develop a self-driven autonomous lab on inorganic materials synthesis and characterization for energy storage applications. In this exciting role, you will have significant responsibilities and play a leadership role in designing, developing, managing, and executing experiments with this autonomous lab. You will help develop new directions and ultimately fund a research program in the areas of autonomous design, synthesis, and development of emerging inorganic materials.

What You Will Do:

  • Conceptualize, design, and build an automated facility for powder materials synthesis using solid and/or solution-based approaches.
  • Develop automated hardware for powder and liquid handling, high-temperature processing, and sample preparation for analytical instruments.
  • Design research projects in autonomous materials synthesis with AI/ML approaches.
  • Conduct experiments in the autonomous lab.
  • Manage and maintain the autonomous lab.
  • Prepare and present proposals and communicate directly nwith the funding agency.
  • Publish and present findings in refereed journals and conferences.
  • Provide supervision of students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Collaborate closely with computational researchers.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. and/or equivalent experience in Material Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Extensive experience working in the following areas:
  • Automation on lab equipment
  • Solid-state synthesis, hydrothermal synthesis, and other ceramic and solution synthesis methods
  • Materials characterizations using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopes, thermogravimetric analysis, etc.
  • Battery cathodes and solid electrolytes
  • Extensive knowledge of materials science, especially in inorganic synthesis and electrochemical systems. Good understanding of computational materials science and machine learning.
  • Outstanding publication record and conference presentations of research in process engineering, materials science, and electrochemistry.
  • Experience in preparing successful funding proposals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with staff within the Division, the Facilities and the Lab, manufacturers, and all members in the group.
  • Successful collaboration experience with computational researchers.
  • Excellent mentoring skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral experience in the development of autonomous synthesis facilities.

  • This is a full-time, 2 years, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
