Job Details

The Veterinary Medicine and Surgery department exists to serve MD Anderson research programs. Our primary mission is to provide the best possible veterinary care, facilities and services in support of the institutional animal care and use program, in keeping with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation standards.

Veterinary Medicine & Surgery

KEY FUNCTIONS

Health Rounds and Quarantine Support
  • Prepare treatments such as medicated water bottles.
  • Provides assistance with quarantine husbandry when primary animal care staff is unavailable.
  • Sex rodents and perform separations when required for health reasons.
  • Provide technical support for Animal Resources Technologists in times of staff shortage and administer treatments or other supportive duties when requested by Section leadership.

Quality Assurance & Euthanasia
  • Gathers mice for sentinel work ups. Sets up the necropsy room the day before for necropsy and tissue harvest.
  • Performs necropsies when assigned.Completes and submits required pathology submission forms.
  • Perform CO 2 euthanasia using the standard procedures and equipment.
  • Performs monthly PCR sample collection and submits appropriate documentation to the laboratory.

Technical Support
  • Assist with placing new animal arrivals into quarantine housing. Assist with gathering animals for export.
  • Perform clinic housekeeping.
  • Clean, prepare, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments/equipment.
  • Maintain surgical instruments in proper working order.
  • Maintain inventory and order supplies.
  • Maintain heating pads and associated equipment.
  • Set up for procedures/training including setting up the isoflurane vaporizer.
  • Participates in training and services.
  • Complete all necessary documentation completely and accurately.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

Required: Three years of animal care experience in an animal hospital/clinic, research facility or related field to include one year in specialized housing and/or technical procedures. With Associate's degree, one year of required experience or with Bachelor's degree, no experience.

Certification

Required: Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) within 180 days of eligibility but no more than 910 days. Any employee hired or rehired after September 1, 2012 must possess required certification.
