JOB SUMMARY

Dr. Guangyu Wang’s Lab within the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences in Houston Methodist, Weill Cornell Medical College is seeking a Research Assistant in support of research projects by completing assignments requiring a basic knowledge of fundamental mathematic and computer science knowledge and practices related to a particular field of academics or research. Applicants must have excellent computer, written, and oral communication skills. Research Assistant (Basic Research) supports Principal Investigators and laboratory members. With a basic understanding of scientific theory and methodology, the Research Assistant is expected to manage experiment data and execute standard analysis based on established software under the supervision of PI, and perform basic data management tasks including the recording of results in lab members’ analysis and data summarization for grant submissions, presentations, and publications.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs basic data analysis according to standard procedures, as assigned by the PI and other scientists. (30%)
  • Demonstrate technical competence in a limited number of statistical techniques and manipulations. (30%)
  • Download or transfer data for analysis, which may include limited analysis and graphic presentation. (20%)
  • Documents all data analysis steps and data in the approved scientific manner. (10%)
  • Conducts background literature research related to assigned projects; summarizes and presents data to PI and other lab staff; assists researchers with the preparation of materials for publication, based on experimental results. (10%)
  • Participate in laboratory meetings, which may involve status updates on current analysis and data summaries. (as needed)
  • Maintain safe, clean, functional, and organized workspace, both in personal and communal spaces. Follows departmental and institutional policies. (as needed)

 

Minimum Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

  2. For laboratory positions: Makes minor modifications and/or repairs on laboratory equipment. Calibrates and operates a variety of laboratory equipment. (EF)
  3. Assists with implementation and education of department-based safety initiatives, standards of practice and protocols. Develops skills of team members and continually assists with improving skills, performance and outcomes. (EF)

 

FINANCE - 10%

  1. Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks. (EF)
  2. Provides data and figures for manuscripts and grants. (EF)

 

GROWTH/INNOVATION - 20%

  1. Participates in the development or establishment of new laboratory and/or department procedures, including biological assays, quantitative and qualitative analysis. (EF)
  2. Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development. Completes and updates the individual development plan (IDP) on an on-going basis. (EF)
