Department Head (Academic Administrator) of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science

The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications from a diverse pool of candidates for a dynamic, innovative, and visionary leader for the position of Department Head qualified for an academic appointment with tenure. The position is open to any area of research interest within Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, and previous experience in academic or professional leadership is desirable. Appointment begins on or after July 1, 2023. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field.

Penn State's Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science is among the oldest, largest, and most respected meteorology departments in the nation, and is recognized for its exceptional record of leadership in the community. The department serves an integral role in advancing the strategic priorities of both the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the disciplinary and related sciences through its vibrant research, in-residence and online undergraduate and graduate education programs, and outreach programs. These programs constitute broad interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach portfolio covering the Earth and atmosphere from the poles to the tropics, across theoretical and numerical modeling applied engineering and mathematics, forecasting and communications across all audiences, physical and dynamical meteorology, remote sensing, weather phenomena across scales, the climate and chemistry of the atmosphere and oceans, social and economic impacts, and more.

Reporting to the dean, the department head provides the environment for the creation and execution of the department's strategic vision and is the representative of the department to senior leadership across the University. Furthermore, the head is responsible for ensuring the fiscal health of the department, including securing the necessary resources to bring its strategic plan to life. To succeed in these objectives, the head must be a collaborative and inspiring leader, promoting excellence and cohesion throughout the department. They must have the strategic leadership skills and entrepreneurial spirit to expand the reach of the department through collaboration with other programs, departments, and institutes throughout the University, with the University administration, and with external stakeholders. The head must be committed to high-quality undergraduate and graduate education, both in residence and online, have a proven track record of excellence in teaching and research, and act as a champion for the diverse set of teaching, research, and outreach programs in the department. A commitment to mentoring, beginning with the undergraduates and continuing through the faculty and staff ranks is essential.
