We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate to perform basic and translational research in the laboratory of Dr. J. Mark Brown, Director of Research at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Microbiome & Human Health and Associate Staff in the Department of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Sciences at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute.

The goals of the Brown laboratory within the Cleveland Clinic Center for Microbiome and Human Health (cmhh.ccf.org), are to elucidate the roles of the varied microbiomes in human physiology and then exploit this knowledge to develop novel therapeutics and approaches to disease management to improve the health and wellness of our patients. To do this we are coupling clinical investigation with mechanistic cell and animal model studies to understand the fundamental aspects of how gut microbial nutrient metabolism produces small molecule metabolites that act in an endocrine manner to impact host cardiometabolic and liver disease. This position is funded by multiple NIH grants, and will involve collaborative research within large programmatic efforts (P01 and P50) focused on diet-microbe-host interactions. The active areas of investigation that you will be involved in are:

1) Metaorganismal Endocrinology: Gut Microbe-Derived Hormones in Cardiometabolic Disease. Microbes resident in the human intestine represent a key transmissible factor contributing to a wide variety of human diseases. Here we are studying how gut microbes generate an array of small molecule metabolites that impact host physiology and disease. This line of investigation is studying the role of diet-microbe-host interactions in the context of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Recent publications from our group in this area include: PMIDs: 35072627, 30082863, 25600868, 26972052, 28683320, 32330092, 32778760, 32404422, 30102568.

2) Diet and Gene Interactions Driving the Progression of Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease (AALD) and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). The progression of AALD and NAFLD to advanced fibrosis and end stage liver disease is driven by a combination of diet and genetic factors. In this line of investigation we are studying the interaction between metaorganismal nutrient metabolism (i.e. microbe and host metabolism) and host genetics (i.e. common and rare genetic variants), with the hopes of identifying new therapeutic strategies for those suffering from advanced liver disease. Recent publications from our group in this area include: PMIDs: 35084335, 31621579, 20620999, 24095738, 29074585, 27396333, 22228714, 23302688.

Postdoctoral research associates will be encouraged to submit applications for postdoctoral fellowship awards from relevant institutional, government and foundation organizations. Postdoctoral research associates will also have the opportunity to prepare and submit abstracts to attend national and international conferences, and will be involved in relevant P01 and P50 related group meetings to diversify the training experience.

Candidates should be self-motivated and have strong laboratory and analytical skills as demonstrated by a strong track record of relevant publications. A D.V.M., M.D. and/or Ph.D. in Nutrition, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Biology or other related fields is required. Outstanding communication skills in English as well as the ability to work well in a highly collaborative team environment are essential. Experience in working with rodent models of cardiometabolic or liver disease is desired, but outstanding candidates without such experience will be considered.
