The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, Texas, seeks Postdoctoral fellows or research scientists to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Wenbo Zhang. The lab focuses on the following research directions:
- Mechanisms of retinal neuronal and vascular injury, and pathological angiogenesis as seen in retinal diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity.
Investigation of mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease and development of novel biomarkers using the retina-brain axis as a platform. Understanding the role of epigenetics in corneal inflammation, neovascularization, and wound healing after chemical injury.
We use cutting-edge technologies, such as 10x Genomics single-cell RNAseq and spatial profiling, proteomics, conditional knockout/knockin mouse, in vivo and in vitro models of retinal diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and corneal chemical burn, advanced non-invasive clinic-relevant imaging and functional tests (e.g. OCT, OCT-Angiography, retinal blood flow measurement, ERG/PERG, corneal confocal microscopy), histology, molecular biology and cell biology, live-cell confocal microscopy, and 3D cell printing, to tackle scientific questions. We have published our studies in high-impact journals, such as Journal of Experimental Medicine, Science Advances, Circulation Research, Cell Death & Disease, Acta Neuropathol Commun, IOVS, etc.
The applicant should be highly motivated, love teamwork, and have interest in working on at least one of the following areas: retinal diseases, corneal would healing, angiogenesis, neurodegenerative disease, cell biology and molecular biology, single-cell RNAseq and spatial profiling and omics, immunology, and pathology. This is a key position within the lab and will be responsible for planning and executing experiments in close collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
