Clinical Director, National Eye Institute

National Institutes of Health

Department of Health and Human Services

The National Eye Institute’s Clinical Director (CD) leads the Office of the Clinical Director (OCD), which includes about 15 clinicians and 30 support staff. The CD provides executive-level programmatic leadership and administrative oversight for intramural clinical research at the National Eye Institute (NEI). This includes development of long-range plans to guide clinical, translational, and public health research efforts, and to integrate those efforts with basic research from the NEI Intramural Research Program (which includes over 20 Principal Investigators and 300 research staff). This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for individuals with a commitment to clinical research excellence as well as the enthusiasm and innovative thinking to lead a dynamic and diverse organization to chart the future of clinical vision research. The CD, working with the Director, Deputy Director and Scientific Director, also provides executive-level scientific leadership, oversight, and direction to the NEI.  The Clinical Director also serves as a member of the NIH Clinical Center Medical Executive Committee (MEC), which serves a crucial advisory role to the CEO of the NIH Clinical Center.

The OCD is best known for the longstanding support given to such clinical studies as the Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS/AREDS2), Partnership for Research on Ebola Virus in Liberia (PREVAIL), cystinosis treatment, ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) for treatment of Macular Telangiectasia, and cutting-edge clinical protocols such iPSC-RPE stem cell therapy and gene therapy for X-linked retinoschisis.

Applicants must exhibit exceptional leadership ability in managing multidisciplinary clinical research programs. Applicants must possess an M.D., MD/PhD or equivalent degree with a current U.S. medical license and be board certified in ophthalmology. Applicants must have senior-level research experience and outstanding scientific knowledge of vision research programs in one or more scientific areas related to visual disorders, mechanisms of visual function, preservation of sight, or the special health problems and requirements of the blind or those with low vision.

The successful candidate for this position will be appointed at a salary commensurate with experience and accomplishments, and full Federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, retirement and savings plan (401K equivalent) will be provided.

Due to COVID-19, the agency is currently in a maximum telework posture.  If selected, you may be expected to telework upon your appointment.
