Junior Professorship (W1) in Applied Quantum Computing

at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences with tentative starting date January 1st, 2023. This is a non-tenure-track W1 position for young scientists with a strong track-record after the doctorate. The position is limited to 6 years.

This professorship is part of the core competence Innovative Computing at ZITI, which is concerned with unconventional solutions to demanding computing problems and covers research, development, and programming of specialized computer hardware (analog and digital), firmware, and hardware-efficient software. The professorship in Applied Quantum Computing is expected to collaboratively tackle the challenge of bringing quantum information processing to applications. Areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Algorithms for quantum computing
  • Programming models and abstractions for quantum computing
  • Application towards machine learning and/or scientific-technical computing
  • Cloud-based quantum computing
  • System engineering for quantum computing

Additional ties within ZITI can be established with the core competences Microelectronics and Robotics, Biomechanics & Medical Technology. Further collaboration opportunities at Heidelberg University are offered by the quantum activities of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, the cluster of excellence STRUCTURES, the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), and the Institute for Molecular Systems Engineering and Advanced Materials (IMSEAM).

The successful applicant will contribute to the Master program Computer Engineering as well as the Bachelor program Computer Science.

Prerequisites for the application are a university degree and a doctorate in a related scientific field. Candidates should generally not have spent more than six years in total of employment as a doctoral and postdoctoral researcher in Germany (see Article 51 of the Higher Education Law of the State of Baden-Württemberg). Heidelberg University stands for equal opportunities and diversity. ZITI seeks to achieve a higher proportion of women in the area of computer engineering. Women are particularly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to disabled applicants with equal qualifications for the position. Information on the collection of personal data in accordance with Art. 13 DS-GVO can be found at www.uni-heidelberg.de/datenschutz_personal.

If the personal requirements are fulfilled in accordance with the general civil service and budgetary regulations of the state of Baden-Württemberg, a transfer to the civil service model is intended for a period of time (Beamtenverhältnis Zeit). The teaching obligation is based on the teaching obligation ordinance of Baden-Württemberg.

Heidelberg University is a comprehensive university with a strong focus on research and an international outlook. With around 30,000 students and 8,400 employees, including numerous top researchers, it is a globally respected institution that also has outstanding economic significance for the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

Applications in English with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications, research and teaching statements) should be submitted exclusively electronically (applications-ing@uni-heidelberg.de) as a single PDF document to Guido Kanschat, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. Applications will receive full consideration if received by September 30th, 2022.
