The US Whitespace & Innovation, Principal Innovation Research Scientist will be responsible for creating, leading, and driving early-stage innovation projects within the US Innovation pipeline that serves all US brand portfolios, across Wellness and OTC Drug. They will ensure that the voice of the consumer is heard, and that the consumer input drives the initiatives pursued. In addition, they will lead identification of new Category opportunities in line with category innovation strategy, and connections to all R&D, Commercial, and Supply Chain functions to enable the building of a robust innovation project for delivery into the pipeline.

The Principal Innovation Research Scientist will work directly with Medical and Regulatory Affairs to deliver consumer and customer-relevant scientific possibilities for substantiated content.

Execution Powerhouse
  • Deliver qualified (consumer and technical) early-stage projects and successfully transition them into the exploratory and governance innovation pipeline, where applicable
  • Identify, assess and drive forward key innovation opportunities
  • Provide technical support and project leadership for identified platform innovation opportunities for the US business, including agile programs.
  • Leads definition and partners to screen and evaluate external technologies and/or product opportunities for potential fit to US GSK brands and front-end portfolio.
  • Leads, in partnership with Commercial Innovation, one or more US R&D platforms in service of mid-term growth strategy.
  • Directs other R&D Scientists and contractors to facilitate completion of early-stage innovation strategy objectives, experiments/scientific work per pipeline and platform objectives.

  • Lead cross-Category knowledge sharing of scientific or consumer opportunities, breaking down any ‘silos' and ensuring innovation platforms span across the US BU categories
  • Drive and maintain awareness of scientific literature and competitive intelligence to assist work progression and understanding

  • Ruthlessly focuses on external R&D dynamic and highlights own training needs and works with manager to develop plan to achieve goals

  • Serve as the voice of the consumer when developing early-stage opportunities through close interaction with consumer insights and product understanding, driving early consumer input / technical consumer understanding into technically feasible concepts.
  • Create technical and product understanding research plans to fit overall project objectives

  • Perform comprehensive, sophisticated, and critical evaluation of internal and external data
  • Author technical papers/presentations to enhance personal, departmental and corporate reputation.
  • Lead Due Diligence on external innovation opportunities to deliver strong technical recommendations

  • Deliver innovative and better ways of doing things; actively look to eliminate non-value-added steps out of processes and procedures. Lead problem solving initiatives.

Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Experience in a scientific role - 7 years with a BS; 4 years with MS, 2 years PhD
  • Experience executing programs across a matrixed environment


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Masters of Science Degree or higher
  • Proven ability to solve complex technical and operational problems in a timely manner
  • A strong technical understanding on the requirements to deliver consumer healthcare product innovation (across medicines, consumer goods, and medical devices) to the marketplace is necessary.
  • An understanding of product development for different dosage forms including material transformations and ingredient compatibility.
  • Experience of partnering with Regulatory, Product Development, Medical Affairs, Supply Chain and Clinical Development on the requirements for product development and an understanding of the approval processes.
  • Experience in consumer-focused global healthcare related products / brand management and partnering across Technical-to-Technical and Technical-to-Non-Technical functions.
  • Maintains external networks and represents the organization on many topics in the role of Innovation
  • Experience of working with External Innovation and the evaluation of external opportunities
  • Experience of working in highly complex matrix organization
  • Demonstrates ability to take initiative, think and work independently, problem-solve, work effectively in teams, and multitask.
  • Ability to lead teams and work through others to achieve objectives.
  • Flair for creativity, expansive thinking when applied to various innovation methodologies and approaches
