As an Expert Scientist in the Structural Biology Lab in the Preclinical Department of GSK Vaccines (Rockville, Maryland), you will be responsible for 3D structural characterization and analysis of candidate vaccine antigens and antibodies, as well as the design of next generation vaccines. This group plays an essential role in supporting preclinical, development, and life-cycle management projects at GSK Vaccines.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist, with a proven track record in the most relevant areas of cryo-electron microscopy, structural vaccinology, computational biophysics and protein engineering, to provide expertise in vaccine development for GSK projects.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career, these responsibilities include some of the following:
  • Expertise in Cryo-EM data collection and analysis of antibody-antigen complexes, in support of vaccine projects.
  • Possesses strong scientific leadership to enable collaboration with key scientific internal and external stakeholders aimed at improving or expanding structural biology capabilities or workflows.
  • Provide detailed scientific analysis to cross-functional project teams and key internal stakeholders regarding structural analysis of vaccine candidates and/or immune responses to natural infection or vaccination.
  • High-quality written documentation/presentation of work to enable publications of data in peer reviewed journals, patent filings, etc.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • PhD degree in structural biology, vaccinology, or related field with 1+ years of postdoc training or work experience.
  • Expertise in all aspects of Cryo-EM sample preparation, data collection, and image processing.
  • Expertise in a variety of Cryo-EM and structural analysis software (i.e Relion, cryoSPARC, PHENIX, Coot,).
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python as well as fluent in a Linux environment and High-Performance Computing clusters.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive and perform independent innovative research.
  • Be a self-starter able to handle multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to efficiently manage uncertainty, changes in priorities and timelines.
  • Strong track-record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, with at least 2 first author research manuscripts.
  • Fluency in English, spoken and written.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have any of the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Proven ability to solve protein-protein (antibody-antigen) complexes or virus like particles by Cryo-EM.
  • Excellent communication skills, good team-player, and ability to effectively collaborate within multiple project workstreams.
  • Experience with Cryo-EM polyclonal epitope mapping.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML applications to vaccine design.
  • Experience in computational structural biology, computational biophysics, structural bioinformatics, and in silico techniques to optimize biomacromolecules for expression, stability & affinity (e.g., proteins, antigens, antibodies, antigen-antibody complexes).
  • Experience with analysis of evolutionary and/or immune repertoire data for structural characterization & design.
  • Experience with structure-based analysis and design software (e.g., Rosetta, Schrodinger, Bioluminate, MOE)
  • Experience with molecular dynamics software (e.g., Gromacs, Amber, CHARMM, Yasara)
  • Familiar with deep learning techniques for structure prediction and characterization (e.g., RosettaFold, AlphaFold).
