The position of associate or full professor in the Department of Pathobiological Sciences is intended for a faculty member that works in the area of infectious diseases and cancer with a preference in viral oncology. The positions are intended for research-intensive faculty with major research programs supported by extramural grants. The additional duties of the full professor is to work with the SVM administration to assist junior faculty in the department and the School for enhancing their competitiveness for extramural funding.

The Department of Pathobiological Sciences (PBS) at the LSU Veterinary Medicine (Vet Med) in the LSU A&M Flagship campus located in Baton Rouge, LA, in collaboration with the NIH-supported Center for Pre-Clinical Cancer Research headquartered at LSU Vet Med and the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology (IO), LSU Stanley S Scott Cancer Center (SSCC, LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans (HSC-NO), seek outstanding candidates for tenure-track or tenured Associate to Full Professor in Viruses and Cancer, Viral Oncology and Immunopathogenesis. LSU Vet Med administers the Louisiana Biomedical Research Network (LBRN) and two NIH-supported centers in Lung Biology and Pre-Clinical Cancer Research. The IO department administers an NIH-supported Center in Translational Viral Oncology. Faculty members working in all aspects of viruses and cancer and associated immunopathogenesis are welcome to apply for this position. The primary faculty appointment is at PBS/Vet Med with the possibility of adjunct status at the SSCC. The successful candidate will be provided with a competitive start-up package, access to high-performance computing, next gen sequencing and bioinformatics, advanced flow cytometry and microscopy core facilities, high quality laboratory animal facilities, access to Biosafety Level 3 laboratories, and modern laboratory space. Candidates will be expected to possess and further develop and maintain strong, externally funded federal research programs, and participate in collaborative projects with other LSU departments and institutes on the campus and LSU at large. The PBS department provides teaching and training in the emphasis areas of bacteriology, epidemiology, immunology, parasitology, pathology, and virology. Departmental faculty are involved in all levels of the professional curriculum, providing lecture and laboratory experiences in bacteriology, mycology, immunology, epidemiology, pathology, parasitology, community health, and virology, as well as anatomic pathology instruction and service in conjunction with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory located at LSU Vet Med. Advanced studies in the department lead to the MS and PhD degrees in veterinary medical sciences for both DVM and non-DVM graduate students. Graduate courses are offered in all disciplines associated with the department. Basic and applied research is conducted in the areas of molecular pathogenesis, disease processes, infectious and parasitic diseases, and immunological responses to disease. PBS has substantial expertise and resources in virology, including molecular virology, immunopathogenesis and vaccinology of human and animal viruses. Topics of research interest include the molecular genetics and cell biology of human and animal herpesviruses, the structure and function of herpes and coronavirus-specified glycoproteins involved in membrane fusion and virion morphogenesis, oncolytic virotherapy and immunotherapy, virus-vectored vaccines, neuro-immunopathogenesis of herpes and coronaviruses, immunopathogenesis of respiratory syncytial virus and human

 

Job Responsibilities:

75% - Successful candidates will be expected to transfer and maintain at LSU a vigorous, extramurally funded federal research program and to contribute to graduate teaching in virology and cancer biology. Develop and maintain an independent and extramurally funded federal research program ranging across all aspects of viral oncology. Associate Professor level faculty are expected to to sustain and expand their extramural funding while at LSU, while Full Professor faculty are expected to also assist in the recruitment and development of departmental faculty to become nationally competitive for extramural funding.

25% - Teach professional and graduate level courses in virology and cancer, and direct/supervise graduate students. Participate in service activities pertaining to the mission of the department, and the advancement of the profession.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
Associate Professor

Ph.D. in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, or related field and 6 years of related experience.

Degree substitute: MD, DVM/VMD, or equivalent

Specific experience: Documented experience in infectious diseases and cancer and current funding by NIH and other federal resources.

 

Full Professor
Ph.D. in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, or related field and 10 years of post Ph.D. education.

Degree substitute: MD, DVM/VMD, or equivalent

Specific experience: Documented experience in infectious diseases and cancer and current funding by NIH and other federal resources.

 

Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. and 8 years of experience.

Specific experience: NIH funding and evidence for ability to sustain research program through renewed grant applications.
