What You Will Achieve
Pfizer's Biotherapeutic Discovery group in La Jolla is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated Senior Scientist to be part of the protein engineering group supporting our biotherapeutics portfolio. Working with the team, you will be responsible for discovery and optimization campaigns on new therapeutics using Pfizer's display libraries. You will use your protein engineering expertise and be responsible for extensive molecular biology of various constructs. You will also contribute to protein expression and purification, as well as development of new cell-based assays. You will have access to state-of-the-art engineering technologies and advanced automation equipment. With your deep knowledge in the discipline, you will be an active team member who influences at the project team level. Your creativity in developing novel processes and new ideas will be used frequently.

How You Will Achieve It
- You will work with the team on discovery of new biotherapeutics by combining your knowledge of the protein scaffolds, surface display technologies and rational optimization techniques
- You will help design workflows and conduct experiments for therapeutics' discovery and optimization
- You will use high-throughput molecular biology methods such as reformatting scFv to IgG, designing and building new libraries, or designing nucleic acid constructs
- You will express and purify various protein scaffolds and develop new cell-based assays
- You will use state-of-the-art automation equipment for screening promising antibody clones
- You will be a part of multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams to develop next generation therapeutics
- You will be responsible for bookkeeping and presentation of results at internal meetings
- You will be working on multiple projects in parallel to ensure timely delivery of potential therapeutic leads
QUALIFICATIONS
Must-Have
- PhD in Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, Protein Biochemistry, Cell Biology) or a related field (Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Biological Engineering)
- MS with 7+ years biotechnology/pharma experience, or BS with 10+ years of biotechnology/pharma experience
- Extensive experience with using molecular biology
- Experience with protein purification techniques
- Knowledge of antibodies and display technologies such as phage/ yeast and/ or ribosome display and experience with DNA and mRNA
- Experience with mammalian cell culture
- Track record of demonstrating analytical skills, bench skills and problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain very detailed experimental documentation
- Understanding the underlying principles of the performed experiments
- Outstanding pro-active attitude, interpersonal, collaborative and oral communication skills
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary scientific team and the desire to learn new techniques
- Good communication skills and ability to present research in a team setting
- Strong time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects in parallel
Nice-to-Have
- Previous experience with phage/ yeast and/or ribosome display
- Previous experience with protein engineering of antibody and non-antibody scaffolds
- Previous experience with development of cell assays and work with nucleic acids
- Previous experience with automation
- Previous experience with high throughput screening methods
- Understanding structure-function relationship for design of protein molecules
