Research Assistant / Postdoc (m/f/d) – CALPHAD integrated phase-field modelling of grain boundaries

Salary group 13 TVöD
Temporary contract until 31.07.2025
Full-time / suitable as part-time employment

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

Grain boundary engineering is growing as a central topic in materials design and discovery. In our team we are excited to explore novel routes for grain boundary engineering and here we look for a keen researcher to join us on a DFG-granted project to explore thermodynamic and kinetic modelling and simulation of segregation and grain boundary phase transformations:

  • Further developing the thermodynamic and kinetic theories of microstructure defects for multi-phase multi-component systems (based on the recently introduced density-based model for grain boundaries)
  • Implementing the theoretical developments in an open-source software package (developed in C++ and Python), its documentation and maintenance
  • Performing systematic simulations and high-throughput computations to explore segregation in multi-phase multi-component alloys
  • Presenting and publishing excellent results on a regular basis and systematic management of the project data
  • Communication and collaboration with project partners

Your qualifications:

  • University degree (diploma/ masters) in materials science & engineering, materials physics or a closely related area with experience in materials modelling and programming
  • completed PhD degree with excellent performance in computational materials science, computational physics or a closely related field is advantageous
  • Solid understanding and experience in modelling alloys thermodynamics and kinetics (CALPHAD approaches and/or phase-field simulation method)
  • Solid knowledge in programming (C++ and Python)
  • Good understanding of metallurgical phenomena (formation and evolution of microstructure defects and their descriptions, elasticity, nucleation and growth, spinodal phase decomposition)
  • Excellent command in English, both written and spoken
  • Experience in software development is an advantage
  • Experience in studying grain boundaries, phase boundaries and related precipitation phenomena is an advantage
  • Strong communication skills, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team/willingness to cooperate as well as willingness to learn

We offer:

  • Interdisciplinary research at the interface of politics, economics and society
  • Work in national and international networks with universities, research institutes and industrial companies
  • Outstanding facilities and infrastructure
  • Flexible working hours and mobile working
