Position Summary

The Pagliarini Lab at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is seeking a Bioinformaticist to assist with projects related to exploring mitochondrial protein function. In particular, we are interested in candidates with extensive experience in areas including analyzing large-scale (e.g., proteomic, transcriptomic, metabolic) data sets, predicting protein activities (e.g., evolutionary history, sequence and domain conservation, structural modeling), and machine learning. The scientist in this position will work closely with other members of the Pagliarini Laboratory on collaborative projects exploring mitochondrial and related metabolic functions. Candidates with well-developed programming (e.g., R, Python) and statistical proficiencies, with broad knowledge of available computational tools, and with advanced communication and interpersonal skills are strongly preferred.

 

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
  • Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers.
  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
  • Conducts literature searches related to research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some level of training in biochemistry and metabolism.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Extensive experience in areas including analyzing large-scale (e.g., proteomic, transcriptomic, metabolic) data sets, predicting protein activities (e.g., evolutionary history, sequence and domain conservation, structural modeling), and machine learning.
  • Well-developed programming (e.g., R, Python) and statistical proficiencies, with broad knowledge of available computational tools.
  • Analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data and to communicate data in a clear, concise manner. 
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data.

 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related field plus four years of experience; or master’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related field plus two years of experience; or combined education and experience of nine years.
