Are you looking to become part of a dynamic team at GSK and apply your skills to accelerate the drug discovery programs for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Frontotemporal Dementia, and ALS? If so, this Senior Scientist position could be an exciting opportunity to consider.

Job Purpose

As a Senior Scientist in Novel Human Genetics Research Unit, you will be responsible for the design and execution of key experimental studies to support our efforts in early stages of drug discovery including target identification, validation, and lead optimization focused on neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation . This role will be an excellent opportunity to learn and apply your skills in building disease relevant human cellular models and biological assays, evaluating targets for drug Discovery, and conducting in vitro pharmaoclogical assays to support pipeline projects.

A successful candidate will be the one who is self-motivated, enjoys working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, and eager to learn new methodologies and concepts. This is a lab based role with responsibilities to differentiate human iPSCs into cell types such as microglia and conduct cellular, molecular biology, and biochemical experiments to support drug discovery projects. Familiarity and experience with cell culture, flow cytometry, cellular/molecular biology and biochemical techniques, and data analysis is required.

Your key responsibilities will be:
  • Establish and validate in vitro cellular models of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation using human iPSC-derived microglia/ neuron/astrocytes either as mono- or co-cultures
  • Support target validation and lead optimization studies with in vitro biological assays established using cellular models, pharmacologic and genetic (e.g., CRISPR, shRNA) tools, and appropriate methods (e.g. Flow cytometry, ELISA, MSD, qPCR, high-content imaging)
  • Responsible for execution of robust studies, data analysis, result interpretation, and reporting
  • Clearly document study details, results and conclusions in electronic lab notebooks, and communicate in internal meetings.
  • Work collaboratively in a matrix environment
  • Commit to continual improvement by reading and applying the latest scientific literature, methodologies and technologies.

About NHG RU: The Novel Human Genetics Research Unit (NHG RU) was formed in 2019 to identify and advance novel targets with genetic association to disease based on the foundational observation that targets with human genetic evidence supporting their causal role in the intended indication improves clinical success by two-fold. The NHG RU is therapeutically broad and complements other research units with strategic focus in immunology and oncology. The current portfolio includes projects focused on neurological diseases, including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS, Pain, in addition to metabolic diseases. The mandate of NHG RU is to identify novel targets based on human genetics, discover and develop assets for clinical studies, and perform Phase 1 first time in human and proof of mechanism studies in clinic. This goal is enabled through strategic external (23andMe, UK Biobank, FinnGen, Laboratory of Genomic Research, Public-Private Consortia) and GSK-internal partnerships (Functional Genomics, AI/ML, and Medicinal Science and Technologies).
