We are seeking a motivated, creative, and meticulous bench scientist with a track record or interest in developing Complex In Vitro Models. These can include organoid technology, applied bio-engineering, and/or microphysiological systems for drug development.

The candidate would join the Complex In Vitro Models (CIVM) team within In Vitro In Vivo translation (IVIVT) department in GSK's research organization at the Upper Providence, Pennsylvania site. CIVM's mission is to improve predictive and translational value of preclinical models. We strive to improve models for MOA, efficacy, safety and metabolism, aiming to assess these in the same systems whenever possible, and to use these systems to refine, reduce, and replace animal models. The CIVM group engages in dynamic, matrixed collaborative projects across therapeutic areas and other IVIVT platform groups.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, qualifying, and validating immune-competent, translational Complex in Vitro Models.

Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
  • Develop and apply complex in vitro assays including 3Dpatient derived organoids (PDO), PDX derived organoids (PDXOs), microphysiological systems, 3D bioprinting, and organ-on-a-chip approaches for vascular, respiratory, oncology, and/or dermal models
  • Development and application of advanced cellular models incorporating components of the immune system and early profiling of drug candidates across different disease areas.
  • Perform cell-based assays in combination with imaging technologies
  • Collaborate in a matrix team environment to ensure optimal delivery of project and department objectives to the highest possible scientific standard
  • Independently write protocols, design and execute laboratory experiments, apply advanced data analysis, interpret data, compile reports, and communicate findings with an emphasis on providing appropriate context in order to progress programs and/or develop platforms
  • Train lab personnel in Complex In Vitro Model technology

Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required characteristics to achieve our goals:
  • Bachelors Degree in the Life Sciences or Engineering
  • Four years minimum laboratory experience with a Bachelors degree
  • Four or more years of experience in a variety of laboratory techniques including: mammalian cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology techniques, immunology assays
  • One or more years of experience in Assay development

Preferred Qualifications:
If you can demonstrate experience in any of the following, it would be a plus:

  • MS in Life Sciences or Engineering
  • Contributions in developing 3D, complex in vitro models for drug discovery projects
  • Automation in a pharmaceutical drug discovery setting
  • Vascularized, respiratory, or dermal complex in vitro models
  • Immunology
  • Biomaterials
  • Detailed documentation of experimental protocols and data in electronic lab notebooks
