Pfizer's Drug Product Design group is seeking team members with a desire to bring new, cutting edge medicines to patients around the world. Our team members use science and technology to design, characterize and develop the solid form of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and drug product formulations to commercial launch. Pfizer's Global Materials Science group is seeking team members with a desire to bring new, cutting edge medicines to patients around the world. The Senior Associate Scientist - Materials Science position is a laboratory-based position with responsibility for investigating and characterizing the solid form, particle, and surface properties of Pfizer's drug molecules. Responsibilities include generating and interpreting data using state-of-the-art instrumentation and computer models to allow new medicines to be brought to the market. The candidate will support multidisciplinary project teams responsible for defining the final form of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) as well as preferred physical attributes needed for optimum API and drug product performance. The position is based in Lake Forest, IL (USA).


  • With guidance, conduct scientific studies to support design of API solid form and particle characterization as well as provide solutions to technical problems.
  • Crystallize drug candidates and evaluate these forms for acceptability as drug substances as it relates to chemical manufacturing and formulation into pharmaceutical products.
  • Conduct solid state and particle characterization for small molecules of pharmaceutical relevance.
  • Read, understand, and follow standard operating procedures, corporate policies, and applicable government regulations.
  • Record experimental details and data into an electronic laboratory notebook and effectively write formal experimental reports.
  • Good communication skills necessary to effectively present experimental observations and results verbally.
  • Effectively contributes to the development of new scientific approaches and knowledge within the global Materials Science organization.
  • Provide Materials Science support for colleagues in other lines.



  • B.S. in pharmaceutical science, chemistry, engineering (chemical or mechanical), biology, physics, or related field with 3+ yrs relevant experience.
  • Good organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines is expected.

  • M.S. pharmaceutical science, chemistry, engineering (chemical or mechanical), biology, physics, or related field with 0-3 yrs relevant experience.
  • A strong interest and motivation to learn new experimental and computational technologies and concepts is desired.
  • Experience in particle/powder characterization (such as polarized light microscopy, electron microscopy, image analysis, laser diffraction methods, etc) and surface property testing (e.g. EDX, atomic force microscopy, etc) for fine powders is desired.

  • Standing or sitting for several hours.
  • Ability to occasionally lift 0 - 40 pounds.

  • Ability to work effectively on multiple projects with set deadlines


This position requires adherence to laboratory practices, including maintaining a clean environment and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment for the task being performed. Flexibility in schedule may be required to perform certain analyses, including adherence to timed studies.
