Chief, Radiation Epidemiology Branch

Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics

National Cancer Institute - National Institutes of Health

The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) of the National Cancer Institute is recruiting a visionary, senior investigator to serve as Chief of the Radiation Epidemiology Branch (REB) within DCEG’s Trans-Divisional Research Program. The position of Chief is equivalent to that of an academic department chair and is part of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) world-class intramural research program (IRP). For an overview of the Division’s goals and strategies, please visit DCEG’s Strategic Plan 2020-2025 - National Cancer Institute.

Organization Mission

The mission of the REB is to identify, understand, and quantify the risk of cancer in populations exposed to medical, occupational, or environmental sources of radiation, and to advance understanding of radiation carcinogenesis. To achieve its mission, REB emphasizes radiation research that informs radiation protection, addresses public health and clinical needs, and develops innovative dosimetry methods and tools to help further these research goals. REB also plays an important role in training future researchers, as well as in responding to and meeting the needs of the public, Congress, and other government agencies for research on urgent questions concerning radiation exposure and cancer risks and communicating knowledge about radiation risks. REB houses the Cancer Survivorship Research Unit, with the goal of improving the clinical care and quality of life of cancer survivors by increasing understanding of the adverse effects of treatment. To read an overview of REB, please visit Radiation Epidemiology Branch, Overview - National Cancer Institute.

Position Description

The Branch Chief will shape the research direction of REB and oversee all aspects of its development, including recruitment of faculty. The Chief will also have resources to conduct an independent program of research. REB currently includes tenured investigators, tenure track investigators, staff scientists, fellows, and other scientific and administrative contract staff. Resources available to REB include epidemiologic studies with detailed medical radiation exposures (diagnostic, radiotherapy for cancer or benign conditions, occupational exposures), both ionizing and non-ionizing environmental radiation exposure (nuclear accidents, atomic bomb detonations, ultraviolet radiation), and cancer survivorship cohorts; access to biorepositories for processing and storage of biospecimens; core laboratory facilities for genotyping, sequencing, and molecular/digital pathology services; and contract support for statistical support and computer programming and for epidemiologic field studies. In addition to managing these resources, the Chief oversees the administrative management of the Branch including the Dosimetry Unit and Cancer Survivorship Unit, supervises staff members, and mentors investigators and fellows. Other duties include providing consultation to national and international investigators and public health officials, and acting as liaison with agencies and organizations seeking expertise related to the mission of the Branch.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will be expected to lead a world-class research portfolio and have extensive expertise in radiation epidemiology. The successful candidate must:

  • Possess either a doctoral degree or medical degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., epidemiology; medical or nuclear physics; or related fields).
  • Have a proven track record of scientific excellence at the international level, publish in peer-reviewed scientific or medical journals, and present at scientific meetings, with international recognition for their research contributions.
  • Meet the criteria for NIH tenure (https://oir.nih.gov/sourcebook/tenure-nih-intramural-research-program/criteria-tenure-nih).
  • Demonstrate administrative experience, including successful mentoring, supervision, and scientific management.

A full package of federal Civil Service benefits is available, including retirement, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent). The successful candidate is subject to a background investigation and public financial disclosure requirements.
