What You Will Achieve

The position is accountable for developing and delivering fermentation and chemical engineering process technology in support of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing at Pfizer's Kalamazoo (Michigan) plant. This position will focus on fermentation development and scale up, including production troubleshooting, support, and improvement. The incumbent will serve as a technical source for fermentation processing, will support laboratory/pilot plant studies, and may support the introduction of new processes into the facility. The incumbent will work closely with both the fermentation and isolation plants to review procedures, evaluate process performance, solve production problems, and provide technical knowledge and expertise for other support functions.

How You Will Achieve It

  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, customer-oriented, laboratory and pilot plant environment to deliver process technology in support of commercial fermentation and downstream operations.
  • Improve and/or support robust commercial fermentation processes to make API and intermediates.
  • Work under general supervision following established procedures, participate in setting project objectives, and recommend actions within experimental programs.
  • Interact with pilot plant personnel (e.g. supervisors, operators) to design and successfully complete pilot scale fermentations in conjunction with process improvement and production support.
  • Maintain laboratory area and equipment in clean, safe, functional order.


Qualifications

Must-Have

  • BS or MS degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or Microbiology
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a research laboratory setting or manufacturing environment (preferred Pharmaceutical or Biotechnology industry)
  • Preference is given to applicants with a strong background of traditional bioprocessing (fermentation, bioconversion, downstream purification, etc.), and/or a working knowledge of cGMP/statistical methods


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

This position involves working in a laboratory/production environment, which may include standing for long periods of time and working with a variety of chemical/biological materials. A strong foundation in bioprocessing is essential for this job.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

Schedule is 1st shift. The position may require colleagues to work off-hours, weekends, and/or holidays as needed to meet business or customer needs.
