The Department of Medicine is recruiting several positions for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the cardiopulmonary field. We seek a recent doctoral graduate motivated to work in a great environment to acquire skills and expertise for the straightforward pathway to independence.

The lab's NIH-funded research is focused on pulmonary vascular disease and cardiac dysfunction in pulmonary hypertension, with specific attention to the role of mitochondria and mechanisms responsible for the sex difference. The research approaches range from molecular biology, vascular biology, animal physiology/pathology that utilizes a spectrum of animal models to translational studies and personalized medicine. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be actively involved in ongoing multi-project settings in a highly productive research environment.

The primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Design, direct, and conduct:
    • cell culture experiments with vascular cells to study mechanisms of proliferation, cell damage, angiogenesis, senescence, cell-cell interactions, etc.
    • molecular biology experiments (manipulating gene expression, plasmids, viral vectors, transcriptomics).
    • physiological studies on animal models (rats and mice) to measure hemodynamic parameters and cardiac function invasively and non-invasively, pulmonary micro-CT and microangiography, isolation of vascular cells and cardiomyocytes, and histological assessment.
  • Perform standard laboratory procedures, including PCR, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, and flow cytometry.
  • Analyze and interpret obtained experimental data.
  • Prepare manuscripts and grants.
  • Present data at weekly lab meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Highly motivated individuals with PhD in molecular and cell biology or physiology with a publication and academic records competitive for external fellowship awards.
  • Technical expertise in standard basic molecular and cellular techniques and experience in vascular cell biology.
  • Expertise in standard laboratory procedures, such as PCR, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, and flow cytometry. Organ and bioliquids collection.
  • Strong writing skills and experience writing manuscripts.

Salary: Based on NIH guidelines.

To Apply: Interested candidates should email their CV, a cover letter explaining their relevant work experience, and 3 names of references to Dr. Ruslan Rafikov (ruslanrafikov@email.arizona.edu) or Dr. Olga Rafikova (orafikova@arizona.edu).
