YSM Science Fellows Program

Request for Applications

The Yale School of Medicine (YSM) seeks applications for the first class of YSM Science Fellows, through which we will recruit four exceptional trainees in the basic, translational, and/or clinical fields each year for the next five years. We specifically seek outstanding recent PhD graduates who — through their research, outreach, mentoring, teaching, and leadership — have a record of excellence in their field and high future potential. This innovative program is part of our effort to enhance discovery and creativity by increasing diversity through the recruitment, support, retention, and promotion of scientists committed to inclusive excellence.

Scope: We endeavor to support faculty from diverse backgrounds in biomedicine, facilitating their transition to independent faculty at YSM. Our goal is to expand the perspectives of the field, develop role models for future researchers, and cultivate the credibility of science within under-represented and other marginalized communities.

Eligibility: YSM Fellows will exemplify excellence in basic, translational or clinical/health services research. Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree by the start of the position. Candidates with research interests aligned with those of Yale basic science or clinical departments are particularly encouraged to apply.

Structured Promotion to Faculty: We will implement an innovative cohort-based scientific development program that will focus on mentorship, individual and group coaching, career development, leadership development, and community building; a special emphasis will be placed on sponsorship. Fellows will build their individual scientific programs initially embedded within a team of 2-3 collaborating faculty and as members of a YSM department with overlapping research interests, with the express purpose of facilitating the YSM Fellow’s development of an independent research program. They will meet twice a year with their faculty mentoring committee that includes their departmental chair. Accepted fellows will develop stated metrics of success (i.e., completion of research milestones, publications, and grants) with their department chairs. Upon achievement of these metrics, fellows may transition into a tenure track research position, with an independent and competitive startup package.

Support: Fellows will receive an annual stipend of $90,000 and independent research funding.

Application Process: A full application packet must be submitted on or before 11:59 pm September 1, 2022 to http://apply.interfolio.com/108050 and should include:

  • An NIH style biosketch (five pages maximum including other support).
  • A research proposal (one page, Arial 11 pt. font, single-spaced) describing potential research interests and possible interfaces to YSM faculty and/or departments.
  • A diversity statement (one page, Arial 11 pt. font, single-spaced) detailing any relevant aspect of your background and how you will contribute to creating a diverse and inclusive research environment.
  • Three letters of recommendation from experts who know the nominee well.

Selection Process: Yale Fellows will be selected competitively based on a candidate’s scientific track record and their future promise as leaders in academic biomedical research, in a process that will include interviews and opportunities to meet with prospective faculty mentors and departmental chairs. The Selection Committee will be composed of key stakeholders at YSM.

Decisions will be made by December 1, 2022.
