The Department of Bioengineering, established in 1998 and now ranked among the top ten bioengineering programs by the National Research Council, is the newest Department in the College of Engineering and hosts a vibrant and growing community of faculty and students. The Bioengineering community consists of almost 800 students, 45 department faculty plus over 100 affiliates on two campuses (Berkeley and UCSF), and is associated with numerous interdisciplinary research initiatives spanning a number of colleges on several campuses.

The responsibilities of the Director include the oversight of all strategic planning, program development, academic affairs, budget matters, and research initiatives under the scope of the MTM Program. At a high level, this program seeks to develop leaders who will create and drive the solutions to today's most pressing health problems by providing graduate education biotechnology, clinical skills, technology translation, technology management, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
