The Department of Immunology and Microbial Disease at Albany Medical College invites applications for a full-time, tenured Professor position as the endowed Theobald Smith Alumni Chair. We seek candidates who are leaders in their field at using innovative approaches to address critical problems in immunology and microbiology. This position provides an exciting opportunity to lead and continue building a highly collaborative department emphasizing infectious disease pathogenesis and mechanisms of protection. The emergence of new pathogens, the increasing development of drug resistance, and the threat of bioterrorism have created an increased demand for investigations into the mechanisms of infection and the body’s ability to combat disease. The Department has outstanding research facilities for this purpose, including a flow cytometry core, microscopy and in vivo imaging resources, and BSL-3 facilities approved for select agent work. Department faculty include internationally recognized experts with a strong history of NIH funding in immunology, bacterial and viral pathogenesis, and molecular mechanisms of human disease. The College has over sixty basic science faculty members comprising four departments (Immunology and Microbial Disease, Molecular and Cellular Physiology, Regenerative and Cancer Cell Biology, Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics), and its central location within the Albany Medical Center Campus fosters a collaborative culture that extends to translational activities with clinical faculty.

The successful candidate will have an established, internationally recognized research program. A strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring is also required, as the Chair will have an essential role in the graduate and medical education missions of the College. Candidates with an excellent record of research productivity and external funding are encouraged to apply. We are committed to diversity, and applications from members of underrepresented groups in biomedicine are especially encouraged.
