Job Details

MAYO CLINIC is a multidisciplinary academic medical center with over 4,000 physicians and scientists in an integrated multi-campus system spanning the globe. We have been recognized as the best hospital in the nation for 2021-2022 by U.S. News and World Report. Our unified mission is to provide the best patient care, backed by our expertise and supported by innovation in education, research and practice, to bring hope and healing in times of need. We support a vibrant and diverse research enterprise, with programs in basic, translational, clinical, and data sciences. In 2020, the institution received over $560 million in extramural research awards, supplemented with over $360 million of institutional support. Mayo Clinic has a world class faculty, laboratories, and state-of-the-art core facilities and biorepositories. The Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences trains and supports PhDs and MD/PhDs.

The Mayo Clinic Department of Neuroscience is recruiting an outstanding early- to mid-career physician/scientist (MD or MD/PhD) with neuropathology training and expertise in aging and neurodegenerative disorders. This individual is expected to establish a robust research program utilizing neuropathological tools to address neurodegenerative disease processes and to take full advantage of the brain bank for neurodegenerative disorders at Mayo Clinic.

Candidates are expected to have or be eligible for board certification to provide neuropathological diagnoses, with a focus on autopsy pathology, rather than neurosurgical pathology. They would provide assessments on brains submitted to the Mayo Clinic Brain Bank for diagnostic evaluation and research. In addition to supporting and collaborating with research scientists within the Neuroscience department, the candidate is expected to establish an independent, extramurally funded research program. Finally, the candidate is expected to participate in education and institutional administrative activities.

THE DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSCIENCE is internationally recognized for academic excellence with a specific focus on understanding the etiology and developing diagnostic and treatment methods for neurodegenerative diseases. Scientists within the neuroscience department have strong expertise in neurogenetics, neuropathology, disease modeling, immunity, and experimental therapeutics. The Department faculty play key roles in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and other large-scale NIH-funded consortia. The Mayo Clinic Brain Bank housed within the department is directed by Dr. Dennis Dickson and has >9000 banked postmortem brains from individuals with cognitive and movement disorders, as well as neuroimmune and motor neuron diseases. The brain bank serves various projects and programs within the institution, as well as supporting broader research community.
