Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of Philanthropy Business Solutions (VP-PBS), the Senior Director of Philanthropy Information Solutions (SDOPIS) serves as a key member of the Philanthropy Operations senior management team and is responsible for overseeing 3 nain areas within Information Solitions: 1) Prospect Development, 2) Business Intelligence, and 3) CRM, technology, and Training in the strategic development, planning and execution of specialized data modeling strategies to gather, analyze, and present advancement analytics in meaningful ways to fundraisers, managers and senior leaders. As an integral member of the VP-PBS's senior management team, the SDOPIS works closely with the Office of Philanthropy Vice Presidents (SSLT) and members of the Philanthropy Leadership Team to identify, quantify and understand City of Hope's philanthropic priorities and to develop data driven strategies necessary to inform business decisions designed to enhance philanthropic support for the institution through pipeline development and institution-wide initiatives including a multi-billion dollar comprehensive campaign.

The SDOPIS is immediately responsible for providing oversight and lending technical expertise and knowledge to create and successfully implement a state-of-the-art CRM database system to help optimize donor portfolios and prospect development strategies. The SDOPD is will guide team efforts to support robust advancement systems and business processes that provide critical and strategic functional support related to the annual and comprehensive campaign philanthropy goals.

As a lead data strategist, the role of the SDOPIS is to support senior leadership on the use of data analytics to drive informed management decisions, motivate professional fundraising staff and manage the identification of prospects to meet complex fundraising objectives of the campus-wide comprehensive campaign.

The SDOPIS provides strategic leadership to and oversight for the Office of Prospect Development to create and sustain a customer service, donor-centric Advancement operation. These core programs include the Information Solutions and Prospect Research teams providing prospect development services including, but not limited to: business intelligence, research and investigations, data analytics and modeling, and prospect and relationship management and consultation. The SDOPIS will also develop and oversee a Prospect & Relationship Management function to support effective and efficient portfolio management.

The Office of Philanthropy is about building relationships and an integral responsibility of this position is to build relationships both internally and externally with an emphasis on proving superb customer service from all members of the Information Solutions team.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Advise VP-PBS and SSLT on the use of data analytics to drive informed management decisions, motivate professional fundraising staff and manage the identification of prospects to meet complex fundraising objectives of the campus-wide comprehensive campaign.
  • In preparation for comprehensive campaign fundraising initiatives, formulate strategy and ongoing analysis and evaluation of key performance metrics to measure the effectiveness of the complex programs and identify resources needed to implement and maintain fundraising and communication programs as required for a successful campaign.
  • Consult with the VP-PBS and SSLT on the strategic business practices to develop targeted projects to build a robust and dynamic donor pipeline to achieve annual fundraising goals as well as key capital projects across campus.
  • Keep apprised of industry standards as it relates to Advancement systems and technologies, analytics, and prospect management and research.
  • In consultation with the VP-PBS and SSLT, develop campaign structures that address goals, and timelines.
  • Undertake unique, sensitive, and confidential projects assigned by the VP-PBS and SSLT.
  • Oversee and manage the annual budget for this unit; adhere to allocated budget. Responsible for applying City of Hope values, policies, procedures and regulatory requirements to ensure consistent operations and reliability of financial reporting.
  • Manage and supervise the design, development and production of complex data and data-driven metrics to support the Office of Philanthropy pipeline and performance tracking.
  • Manage an effective administrative unit. This responsibility includes:
    • Supervise staff.
    • Screen applications, interview candidates and either make selection decision or recommend individuals for hire.
    • Train and assign work to new and continuing employees/students. Provide guidance on performance standards and Organization procedure.
    • Independently conduct performance evaluations, including communication with subordinate.
    • Make recommendations for employee incentive awards and salary increases including merits and reclassifications.
    • Determine what discipline should be imposed for subordinates, with authority to apply such, and/or submits/recommends same to higher level management.
    • Work effectively with Human Resources regarding any personnel issues.
  • Communicate with other units to create original designs and to upgrade existing programs for a more useful, robust product for the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Focus on issues of organization; overarching goals of the Office of Philanthropy; provide direction on projects, tracking of goals, problem resolution, staff motivation, evaluation, individual growth, training and education opportunities, and career advancement.
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team for Philanthropy Operations, direct the redefinition of policies and practices for the Prospect Development units. Ensure alignment integration of revised policies and practices with new Advancement information systems.
  • Information Solutions:
    • Lead and direct the overall strategy for the Information Solutions including overall management and strategic direction for OOP's CRM, as well as other technology platforms and corresponding training programs.
    • Independently responsible for the development of predictive modeling capabilities to bolster the pipeline of prospects in different giving ranges, exploring new prospecting models, and developing innovative complex metrics for informing professional fundraising staff.
    • Direct the integration of data analytics into fundraising processes by continually evaluating the needs for the Office of Philanthropy and evolving solutions for meeting those needs.
    • Identifying opportunities to solve business problems and improve operations using data, analytics, and predictive models
    • Translating business objectives into quantifiable performance metrics to evaluate existing solutions and estimate the impact of new data-driven solutions
    • Lead the team's continual analysis of prospect pool segmentation, providing input for the creation of their SWOT analysis and ROI to best achieve fundraising targets.
    • Lead the execution of fundraiser performance metrics, forecast metrics and reports as directed by the VP-PBS. These metrics will be the key measures for ensuring individual fundraiser progress toward fundraising objectives.
    • Direct the implementation and maintenance of self-service analytics and reporting capabilities through the use of information systems, new and existing reporting facilities, and the Enterprise Data Warehouse.
    • Lead the evaluation and implementation of data enrichment and acquisition programs and services.
    • Provide leadership for all information systems, ensuring that all projects are prioritized, resourced, documented and managed. Serve as technical and data liaison for the Office of Philanthropy, advocating for the department's technology needs by implementing new solutions, draft technical specs, and keeping up-to-date on the current technology advances in the fundraising field.
    • Manage the delivery of reliable and timely datasets through the use of established and new reporting facilities to support the strategic planning and operational effectiveness of key fundraising programs.
    • Analyze available internal and external data sources, and employ data mining, predictive modeling, forecasting, and statistical analysis techniques to provide information and tools that support the Office of Philanthropy in achieving its annual and campaign goals.
  • Prospect Research:
    • Provide leadership and overall strategy for the Office of Prospect Research
    • Maintain continual partnerships with other development leaders to create, deliver and refine analytics, and business processes and products that support and guide prospecting and program efforts.
    • Through the Director of Prospect Research: Ensure that the Prospect Research team anticipates, prepares, and effectively meets fundraisers' evolving prospect research and information needs.
    • Through the Director of Prospect Research: Ensure the quality and timeliness of research services, including specialized research and investigation requests.
  • Prospect & Relationship Management:
    • Develop team, process and function and ensure that the Prospect & Relationship Management team anticipates, prepares for and effectively meets fundraisers' evolving needs, including innovative and useful reports, and productive and timely interactions.
    • Ensure the data integrity of the prospect moves management system, including contact reports, proposals, team assignments, and associated moves.
  • Direct frontline fundraisers and senior development staff in achieving individual and broader fundraising goals by providing ongoing consultation through the use of data that is consistent in the tracking all fundraising activities.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • BS degree in the field of Business, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in an academic environment.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in the field of prospect development and analytics, including management/leadership.
  • Knowledge of principles of fundraising.

Preferred education experience and skills:
  • Master degree in the field of Business, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in an academic environment.
