The Texas A&M AgriLife Institute for Advancing Health Through Agriculture (IHA) is the world’s first academic institute to bring together precision nutrition, responsive agriculture and social and behavioral research to reduce diet-related chronic disease in a way that is environmentally and economically sustainable.

We are looking for a visionary, internationally renowned leader and scholar in agricultural sciences to serve as Associate Director for Responsive Agriculture for the IHA. This newly formed interdisciplinary institute will lead the nation in achieving the new expectations of the Agriculture-Food-Health system to promote human health, environmental health and economic health through research.

About the Institute for Advancing Health Through Agriculture

The Texas A&M AgriLife Institute for Advancing Health Through Agriculture (IHA) is accelerating Texas A&M AgriLife’s efforts to deliver the research, education and services that use agriculture to combat the nation’s diet-related chronic disease epidemic and to bolster the health of our environment and economy. As a platform for the exchange of big ideas and data, the IHA will advance research to help agricultural producers harness big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning to produce food that improves public health and strengthens producers’ economic viability. The IHA includes a USDA Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) unit called “Responsive Agricultural Food Systems Research Unit.” The program will be composed of a mix of new ARS scientists and Texas A&M faculty. The IHA and its embedded ARS research unit will work collaboratively with other ARS and land-grant universities to bring big data, state-of-the-art sensors and computational systems approaches to responsive agriculture and precision nutrition.

The Associate Director will work collaboratively with two scientific associate directors, under the general direction of Dr. Patrick Stover, director of the IHA, to:

  • Serve as a member of the Institute leadership team.
  • Develop comprehensive scientific research programs to achieve the mission and vision and establish the strategic priorities of Responsive Agriculture hub, which seeks to position agriculture as the solution to human health, environmental sustainably and economic profitability.
  • Build and manage an independent Responsive Agriculture research portfolio within the IHA that transforms the future of agriculture and publishes results in top-tier refereed publications.
  • Secure extramural funding, with special emphasis on competitive sources.
  • Seek collaborative research opportunities with other Institute Associate Directors to help realize the vision of connecting health through agriculture across the entirety of the agriculture value chain from producer to consumer.
  • Form collaborative research project teams and seek funding sources to support them; maintain a high level of scholarly activity under the IHA.
  • Participate and lead as a thought leader in agricultural sciences through assisting in the organization of conferences, workshops and other convenings.
  • Represent the Institute to internal Texas A&M AgriLife and university faculty, including attracting new faculty participants and facilitating sustainable relationships with broader partners and stakeholders.
  • Serve as a key liaison to external constituents, including foundations and government agencies, and identify community, domestic, and international experts associated with a wide variety of relevant disciplines.
  • Pursue philanthropic efforts related to agriculture to support the activities of the IHA.
  • Support Public-Private Partnerships across the entire Agri-Food-Health Value Chain.
  • Represent the Institute on key national and international leadership committees; and build sustainable and substantive relationships with the institute’s internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with preparation of budgets and leads annual budgeting and expense control for assigned areas.
  • Establish performance goals and metrics to evaluate the success of areas of responsibility.
  • Oversee State and Federal reporting for assigned program area.
  • Oversee coordination of programs and ensures that program goals are consistent with Institute, agency, and System missions.
