ROLE SUMMARY
Pfizer is leveraging on its incredible success in delivering the first mRNA vaccine and three gene therapy phase 3 clinical assets to develop revolutionary gene editing therapies in rare diseases. Pfizer's Rare Disease Research Unit (RDRU) is focused on delivering therapies that fundamentally transform what it means to live with a rare disease, including rare neurology/neuromuscular, cardiology, hematology, metabolic, and renal diseases. The Principal Scientist will be part of the newly formed gene editing team to build the internal gene editing platform for translational research to develop transformational therapeutics for rare diseases. This individual will also collaborate with cross functional teams that combine Disease Biology, Biomedicine Design, Medicinal Chemistry, and Drug Safety expertise to advance innovative drugs to the clinic.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design and evaluate gene editing constructs in mammalian cells
• Establish and perform molecular assays to determine on target gene editing efficacy
• Onboarding and assess next generation sequencing based assays to determine genome wide off target mutagenesis
• Perform various cell biology and immunology assays
• Partner with colleagues working on gene editing projects within the rare disease unit and other partner lines
• Manage and mentor 2~3 junior reports
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Qualifications
• Ph.D. in molecular biology, synthetic biology or related field with 5+ years of relevant experience
• Prior experience in gene editing technologies and next generation sequencing a must
• Proficiency in mammalian cell culture
• Evidence of scientific accomplishments in the form of peer-reviewed publications as a first or co-first author
• Excellent trouble shooting, capability, attention to detail and ability to work independently as well as part of a team
• Exceptional communication and presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous experience in base editors
• Previous experience in translational gene editing research
