Associate Professor – NMR Facility Manager

The Department of Molecular Biology and Biophysics (MBB) at UConn Health in Farmington, CT, seeks a PhD-level scientist to serve as the NMR Facility Manager. The appointment is expected to be at the assistant professor (in residence) level, commensurate with experience.  The primary responsibilities will include maintenance of NMR instruments from multiple vendors (Agilent and Bruker), assisting users with instrument setup and data analysis, implementing and testing custom pulse sequences at user requests and working on detailed analysis of complex NMR data. The candidate will also play a key role in implementing instrument upgrades and the installation of new spectrometers.

A PhD in chemistry or related field in magnetic resonance is preferred. The candidate is expected to have experience using modern NMR instrumentation and have experience in developing, implementing, and setting up and analyzing macromolecular solution NMR experiments. Experience in cryo-systems (Bruker/Agilent cryo-probe maintenance, helium recovery systems) is also preferred, as is experience with NMR software, including Bruker Topspin, Bruker pulse programming and Varian software.

The UConn Health NMR facility is currently home to four spectrometers (400, 500, 600, and 800 MHz), most equipped with cryogenic probes, with plans for expansion and upgrades in the coming years. The facility serves multiple highly collaborative faculty from across the UConn Health and UConn Storrs campuses, with the major users representing decades of NMR expertise, located in MBB at UConn Health, the home department of the NMR facility manager position. For information about the department, visit https://health.uconn.edu/molecular-biology-biophysics/.

UConn Health offers exceptional health benefits, retirement benefits and also tuition waivers for dependents. UConn Health is situated in the beautiful and affordable Farmington River Valley near Hartford, CT, only 2 hours from Boston and New York City.

The rank and salary are commensurate with experience. Appointment will be at the Research Associate level for a candidate meeting the minimum requirements. A more experienced candidate could be appointed as Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will:

  • Maintain the NMR facility: monitor operational status, perform cryogen fills, maintenance of the NMR probes, helium compressor, and other components of the instruments. Maintain checklists for safe use of the systems by different users and keep logs of instrument performance parameters. Design and implement novel NMR pulse-experiments at requests of major users and maintain a database of custom NMR pulse-sequences for studies of structure, dynamics and interactions of biological macromolecules. Plan, design and implement collaborative NMR projects for the broader biomedical research community at UCHC and help train students in biological NMR methods. assist in recording data. Interact with the broad user base of the facility to achieve high quality data collection and data analysis, train users to become efficient in using the instruments, and plan and organize NMR measurement time. Troubleshoot NMR spectrometers to ensure maximum uptime, perform routine maintenance, communicate independently with vendors, and install new equipment. Be an excellent communicator, and eager to contribute intellectually to a dynamic environment involving multiple research groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with hardware and software of modern high field NMR spectrometers primarily used for studies of bio-macromolecules in solution, including cryoprobes. Familiarity with multidimensional, multinuclear pulse sequences for the investigation of bio-macromolecular structure and dynamics and methods for NMR data processing and analysis. Familiarity with NMR pulse-sequence programming and design and able to implement novel experiments. Ph.D. in chemistry, biophysics, or related discipline 2 years experience post-Ph.D. performing biomolecular NMR research leading to first-author publications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years experience post-Ph.D. performing biomolecular NMR research leading to first-author publications
