Job Description


The Biodesign Institute’s Center for Immunotherapy, Vaccines and Virotherapy (CIVV) focuses on the biological, immunological, epidemiological, and clinical aspects of infectious diseases, cancer, and inflammatory disorders.


This is a full-time Research Specialist position in the Florsheim Laboratory of the Center for Immunotherapy, Vaccines and Virotherapy at the Biodesign Institute of Arizona State University. The research focus of the group is on cellular immunology and physiology in models of allergic inflammation. The successful candidate will train directly with Dr. Florsheim (she/her/hers) investigating the immunological mechanisms of allergies, with a specific focus on the gastrointestinal tract (learn more at 


The successful candidate will be instrumental in setting up the lab infrastructure (management of equipment/supplies and maintenance of the mouse colony), as well as starting up new research projects and performing experiments. The candidate will establish a variety of lab procedures, including molecular biology, immunology and cell culture techniques, as well as mouse experimentation. The successful candidate must be willing to work with mice and be enthusiastic about research.

Essential Duties


  • The Research Specialist will establish the laboratory’s basic techniques in Immunology (e.g., flow cytometry, ELISA, histology, real time PCR) and work on a range of projects investigating the role of immune cells in gut homeostasis and in the pathogenesis of food allergies using in vivo (mice) and in vitro models. The successful candidate will perform a variety of lab experiments described below. Main responsibilities include preparing laboratory stock solutions; ordering reagents, equipment, and office supplies; organizing the lab finances; maintaining organized records of the mouse colony and all the lab reagents; maintaining laboratory equipment (including computers); shipping and importing reagents and animals; breeding, weaning, and sexing mice; developing experimental protocols; organizing the laboratory meeting schedules; keeping an organized laboratory notebook; mentoring new personnel, and other duties assigned by the principal investigator or their designee. The candidate will provide technical assistance with day-to-day operations to postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students, and research staff within the group. The candidate will design and perform experiments as well as assist other lab members in the execution of projects involving mouse handling and potential surgeries. The candidate will also assist in molecular, immunological, and histological analysis of cells and animal tissues derived from ongoing projects. The successful candidate will be extremely organized, detail oriented and willing to work with animals. Experience with cell culture and flow cytometry are strongly preferred, enthusiasm and willingness to learn are essential. Tissue digestion, flow cytometry, protein quantification assays RNA extraction and next generation sequencing Standard cellular, molecular, and biochemical techniques Cell culture maintenance (generation and maintenance of mast cells and others) Mouse handling, breeding, weaning Genotyping and organizing the mouse colony Daily maintenance of the laboratory including ordering reagents Data analysis and data interpretation Ability to independently follow detailed instructions and lab procedures Enforcement of safety rules and procedures Train new lab members and communicate often with Dr. Florsheim  

The proposed job responsibilities and % of time spent on each (100% total) are the following:


  • Experiments/technical support on projects = 50% Lab organization/ordering = 30% Animal work (colony maintenance, genotyping) = 20%

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications


  • Experience working in a biology laboratory, molecular biology and immunology techniques required (PCR, cell culture, flow cytometry). (2 years)

  • Evidence of organization skills Experience in work that requires attention to detail Evidence of effective interpersonal and communication skills; evidence for teamwork Experience in scientific research Experience with handling mice and genotyping Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and techniques of inflammatory responses Experience with general laboratory techniques in cell culture and histology Experience with molecular biology laboratory techniques such as qRT-PCR Experience with immunoassays (ELISA), flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence Experience with computer skills and software: MS Office, Adobe Illustrator, Graphpad Prism, FlowJo, Biorender


Working Environment


  • Climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting.  Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer;  Some bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 20 pounds.  Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.  Expected to be responsive to customers, engaged in work production, resourceful, flexible, and respectful of others.
